Prior grain loading, it is Important that ship’s staff is aware of the grain requirements in terms of cleanliness and stability. Cargo holds should be clean to grain clean standard and free from previous cargo residues, odor, lashing materials, rust scales, paint flakes and tested for water tightness. Water ingress system and bilges are checked and tested too prior to loading. Grain stability calculations should be prepared covering the minimum criteria throughout the voyage from the first loading port to the last discharge port. It may be necessary to take some ballast in double bottom tanks to improve the stability, In this case, ballast water can be taken after sailing (to take clean ballast onboard). During the voyage, temperatures are taken and recorded on daily basis, if weather permits. Finally, if the cargo is to be discharged at more than one port, the vessel must comply with grain requirements at every stage of the voyage.
