    Only 25% of student teachers chose teaching because they’re interested in it. Is this a problem? I recently came across a statistic: only 25% of student teachers go into teaching because they’re genuinely passionate about it. The rest? They might be in it for job security or because it was their fallback plan. And you know what? I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. When I think about the teachers who impacted me the most, they weren’t the ones who loved teaching as a profession. They were the ones who were absolutely obsessed with their subject. I’ll never forget my 6th-grade science teacher. One day, someone mentioned black holes, and he got so excited that he threw the whole lesson plan out the window and spent the entire class talking about how they work. We were mesmerized. Even the kids who hated school went home that night to Google black holes so they could join the discussion the next day. He didn’t love teaching—he said as much—but he loved science. That love was infectious, and it made him one of the best teachers I ever had. This whole idea was reinforced during our time at the Sputnik ATX accelerator. One week, they trained us on how to pitch to investors and gave us this piece of advice: “Talk to investors as if they’re kids.” To make the point hit home, Sputnik took it to the next level and literally invited kids to our pitches. We presented our startups to them, and they “invested” using Monopoly money. The experience wasn’t just fun—it reminded me how powerful passion can be. Just like my 6th-grade teacher, it showed me that the key to inspiring others isn’t loving the act of pitching (or teaching)—it’s being so obsessed with your subject that your energy becomes contagious. So maybe we’re focusing on the wrong thing. Instead of expecting teachers to be passionate about the job of teaching, shouldn’t we be finding people who are passionate about the subjects they’re teaching? Isn’t that the kind of energy that sticks with students?
