Recently, senior members of the FURUKAWA ELECTRIC GROUP Electric Group visited the UKAEA’s Fusion Technology Facility in South Yorkshire, a cutting-edge site that tests components under conditions representative of those found in a fusion power plant, as well as our facility in Culham, Oxfordshire. Future fusion plants, such as STEP, will employ high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. These HTS magnets generate much stronger magnetic fields than conventional electromagnets and operate at higher temperatures than traditional low-temperature superconductors (LTS). These properties help to reduce the size of fusion machines and increase their fusion power density, leading to more cost-effective and potentially economically viable fusion pilot plants. Furukawa Electric Group's SuperPower Inc. is a leading producer of HTS magnet tapes and wires. These advanced materials hold transformative potential for applications in fusion energy, medical and scientific instruments, power transmission lines, and electrical machinery. We welcome collaborations with companies such as Furukawa Electric to develop capabilities that will advance our goal of providing fusion energy to the grid.
