Effectively, the third IAPH World Ports Conference was held in Mexico City in 1959, even though the banner "segunda conferencia trienal" referred to the new frequency of the event following the Los Angeles gathering. Courtesy of some archive digging by our Tokyo colleague Fumiko Yamaji, we can publish all the participants from 65 years ago in an early panoramic photo in black and white. #IAPH70th #IAPH2025

This iconic image of the IAPH World Ports Conference held in 1955 at the Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California is the first slide you will see in every introductory IAPH presentation as it is remembered as the founding meeting of IAPH. Despite strong encouragement from US representatives, founder Gaku Matsumoto declined to become the first IAPH president, reasoning that Japan should not dominate the association. A selection committee, composed of members from Asia, Europe, and America, appointed Bennett J. Roberts (Canada) as president, John Iwar Dahlin (Sweden) as first vice president, and Ching-wen Chen (China) as second vice president. Fourteen directors were elected, and a board meeting was held, during which it was decided that the central secretariat would be located in Tokyo under the leadership of the first Secretary General, Gaku Matsumoto. #IAPH2025 #IAPH70th
