IGES will host an official side event "Article 6.2 Implementation for High Integrity: Updates, Lessons and Challenges" at #COP29 tomorrow at 13:15-14:45 (AZT). The implementation of the cooperative approach under Article 6.2 is gaining momentum as more actors enter the space and gain experience. The side event will provide an overview of the status of cooperation and current mitigation activities as well as measures for ensuring high integrity. The focus will be on reflecting on challenges and lessons learned from the perspective of both acquiring and host countries as well as the private sector. This will help interested countries and activity owners to better understand the A6 mechanism and the role it can play for high-integrity carbon markets. https://lnkd.in/gdvgVZqH

ISAP2024 Thematic Track 2 "Co-creating the National Long-term Roadmap to Synergise Mitigation and Adaptation in ASEAN" 1 November JST 15:00 - 16:30 (GMT+09:00) The ASEAN Community has reached a historical point in the development of the ASEAN Climate Change Strategic Action Plan 2025-2030 (ACCSAP) and establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change (ACCC). The aim is to integrate existing policy and institutional frameworks at the regional and national levels, and to show and enable ASEAN’s pathway to a resilient net-zero ASEAN. For a transition that integrates both mitigation and adaptation, it is vital to update national climate policies such as long-term strategies (LTS), nationally determined contributions (NDCs), and national adaptation plans (NAPs), based on an innovative methodology linked to an integrated roadmap. This will trigger the mainstreaming of climate change objectives and measures into sectoral policies domestically. Furthermore, considering the diversity of ASEAN countries in terms of vulnerability to climate change and capabilities for mitigation and adaptation, it is essential to capture the variations across countries and multiple stakeholders, especially with regards to the (i) long-term national developmental visions, (ii) climate goals, and (iii) key challenges and critical factors on the pathways of mitigation and adaptation. Against this background, this session aims to (1) share the preliminary results of the ongoing international research project (i.e. questionnaire survey analysis and consultation with national ministries at the national workshops), and (2) provide recommendations about the mitigation and adaptation integration at the national policy level in ASEAN/Asian countries, featuring discussions based on the opinions and perceptions of key stakeholders such as experts, industries including the power and finance sectors, and youth. https://lnkd.in/g7mAx88e

At the 24 Oct media briefing, the CBD Secretariat said that sets of national targets had been received from more than half of the CBD Parties, adding that this may help to reduce some of the concern about the low number of national #biodiversity strategies and action plans (#NBSAPs) so far submitted. #CBDCOP16

Dr. Johan Rockström Visits IGES and Delivers Special Lecture On 9 October, Dr. Johan Rockström, visited the IGES Tokyo Sustainability Forum and delivered a special lecture to IGES staff and stakeholders. This event was made possible due to the long-standing relationship at both an institutional and personal level, including collaboration between the two institutions via the Earth League, a think-tank alliance that tackles urgent challenges facing humanity, as well as IGES’s contribution to the Japanese translations of Dr. Rockström’s books, such as "Big World Small Planet: Abundance within Planetary Boundaries" and "Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity: A Report to the Club of Rome (2022), Fifty Years After The Limits to Growth (1972)". In his lecture, Dr. Rockström shared the latest scientific insights on planetary boundaries and sounded the alarm on the current state of the world, pointing out that we are already halfway through the "Decisive Decade" from 2020 to 2030, which will greatly influence the future of humanity. He also introduced the newly launched "Planetary Health Check 2024" initiative. https://lnkd.in/gbaT8H4h
