Canada plays a pivotal role in advancing fusion energy development and deployment, leveraging its deep-rooted leadership in nuclear science and innovation. At the heart of this leadership is Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), whose world-class expertise in tritium management sits perfectly at the intersection of fusion and fission technologies. Last week, I had the honor of representing Kyoto Fusioneering (KF) at the Canadian Science Policy Centre's conference on the panel, "The Multiple Hats of Nuclear: How Nuclear Innovation is Transforming the Clean Energy, Health, and Environmental Waste Sectors." It was a fantastic opportunity to discuss why KF partnered with CNL to establish Fusion Fuel Cycles Inc., a joint venture focused on developing, demonstrating, and deploying cutting-edge tritium fuel cycle technology for commercial fusion energy applications. A big thank you to my brilliant co-panelists Rob Whittleston (moderator, not pictured), Ömer KAYA, Dr. Fei-Fei Liu, and Peter Elder for sharing their insights and making the session an enriching experience. Canada’s leadership in fusion energy, alongside the US, Japan, the UK, and the EU, is essential to realizing the global fusion vision. I look forward to continued collaboration with policymakers, industry leaders, and academia to make this future a reality.
