NYK Makes Nature Positive Declaration and Joins 30by30 Alliance Promoting preservation of the marine environment and biodiversity as important issues On October 29, NYK released its "Nature Positive Declaration," as encouraged by the Japan Conference for 2030 Global Biodiversity Framework (J-GBF), which has Japan’s Ministry of the Environment as its secretariat. Additionally, on November 13, NYK joined the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity initiated by 17 organizations from industry, private and public sectors, and Japan’s Ministry of the Environment. As a short-term goal toward the 2050 vision of a world in harmony with nature, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted in December 2022 at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity set the 2030 mission to "take urgent action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss to put nature on a path to recovery," i.e., the achievement of a nature-positive economy. J-GBF is thus promoting collaboration with the participation of all sectors in Japan, including the national government, local governments, businesses, citizens, and NGOs to achieve international targets and national strategies. To start with, stakeholders are encouraged to make a declaration of their activities toward becoming nature-positive. Participation in the 30by30 Alliance means actively promoting the 30by30 targets, which are positioned as one of the goals toward realizing a nature-positive economy. NYK has positioned the "marine environment and biodiversity conservation" as one of the environmental issues that must be addressed, and NYK is striving to preserve biodiversity. Our environmental DNA sampling of the open ocean and our reforestation project, "Yu no Mori," align with our efforts to realize a nature-positive economy. As for the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity, we aim to register Yu no Mori, which began in May 2024, as an OECM and will work on reforestation through Yu no Mori to achieve the 30by30 targets and contribute to the realization of nature positivity. On March 10, 2023, the NYK Group released its medium-term management plan “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 — A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing.” The NYK Group is promoting growth strategies with ESG at the core, based on the Group’s mission statement of “Bringing value to life” and a new corporate vision for 2030, which reads, “we go beyond the scope of a comprehensive global logistics enterprise to co-create value required for the future by advancing our core business and growing new ones.” Press Release: https://lnkd.in/gFnFy7zy Related Press Releases: https://lnkd.in/gqHUh9M7 https://lnkd.in/gcEY5Yri https://lnkd.in/d8eXkXrG Related Sites: https://lnkd.in/gUHazvPA https://lnkd.in/gZmJRGK6 #NYK #biodiversity

NYK Obtains Certification under Aichi Biodiversity Corporate Certification System NYK has obtained certification under the Aichi Biodiversity Corporate Certification System that Aichi Prefecture has established to promote corporate initiatives for biodiversity conservation. Yusuke Sasada, general manager of NYK’s Nagoya Branch, attended the certification ceremony held at the Aichi Prefectural Government Office on November 13. Since 2023, NYK has been making donations and participating in volunteer activities to support efforts to restore seaweed beds on Sakushima Island in Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture. These efforts have been recognized as corporate initiatives for biodiversity conservation. NYK Group will continue actively engaging in environmental conservation, such as marine environment and biodiversity preservation activities. What is the Aichi Biodiversity Corporate Certification System? Aichi Prefecture formulated Aichi Biodiversity Strategy 2030 in February 2021, providing specific guidelines for various entities, including companies, universities, environmental conservation organizations, and government agencies, to promote biodiversity conservation and its sustainable use within the prefecture. As part of this initiative, the Aichi Biodiversity Corporate Certification System was implemented starting in fiscal 2022 to certify companies implementing excellent biodiversity conservation efforts. On November 25, Eng Dih Teo, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) , and Kenneth Lim, Assistant Chief Executive of MPA, visited the Nagaoka factory of TB Global Technologies Ltd. (TBG) in Niigata, Japan. NYK is jointly developing a bunkering boom, a device used to supply ammonia between ships with TBG. MPA delegation also visited the ammonia-fueled tugboat Sakigake — developed, built, and operated by the NYK Group and now under a three-month demonstration period in Tokyo Bay —, and observed the ammonia-fueled engine and other equipment. In July, MPA and NYK signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the sustainable development of the maritime industry in Singapore. Both parties agreed to work together to promote the use of clean fuel ammonia for vessels, including bunkering vessels operating in Singapore, and to consider training programs for seafarers on ammonia-fueled vessels. MPA delegation visited the Nagaoka factory of TBG to observe the bunkering boom planned to be installed on the ammonia-bunkering vessel that NYK is developing. NYK and TBG are jointly developing the bunkering boom, which uses TBG's technology to minimize the risk of ammonia leakage and safely supply ammonia between ships. During the Sakigake visit, MPA delegation observed the ammonia-fueled engine and related equipment. This tug was jointly developed by NYK and IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. after being selected as a Green Innovation Fund project by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The vessel was completed in August and has since been engaged in towing operations in Tokyo Bay during a three-month demonstration period as the world's first commercial-use ammonia-fueled vessel. Sakigake incorporates several safety designs for using fuel ammonia and is thus expected to contribute to the spread and expansion of the use of fuel ammonia in ships, including bunkering vessels. NYK is developing ammonia bunkering businesses in Singapore and other major bunkering ports in Japan and overseas. NYK will continue to cooperate with MPA in various initiatives aimed at the sustainable development of the maritime industry, utilizing the knowledge and technology gained through research and development of ammonia-fueled ships and fuel-ammonia supply equipment. https://lnkd.in/dBfbdt_H More information: https://lnkd.in/gRkeZSJ8 https://lnkd.in/gFvCUq-N https://lnkd.in/gTSm7iut https://lnkd.in/dX45XsDf #NYK #maritime #seafarers #Ammonia

≪NYK Conducts Short-term Study-abroad Program in Japan for Philippine Marine Students≫ Provides Filipino students with opportunity for student exchange and to learn more about Japan’s maritime industry NYK successfully conducted a second international short-term student-exchange program from October 20 to 26 between students from national maritime schools in Japan and those from the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA), which NYK operates in the Philippines. For this second exchange, eight NTMA students visited Japan for onboard training and cutter boat training at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology and the Hiroshima College of the National Institute of Technology, as well as for a roundtable discussion with Filipino seafarers on shore duty at NYK's head office. Japanese students who participated in the program commented, "It was very stimulating to be able to experience the atmosphere of a foreign marine school," "Everyone at NTMA was very kind and friendly," and "I was impressed by how the Filipinos appeared to enjoy eating traditional Japanese food such as miso soup and natto.” An NTMA student commented, "It was a very valuable experience not only to be exposed to the culture of a different country but also to practice what I had learned only on film, such as starting a ship's main engine. It was a very meaningful program.” NYK will continue to cooperate with educational and research institutions in Japan and abroad to contribute to the development of young people who will be the future of the maritime industry. * Transnational Diversified Group (TDG) A business group established by Chairman J. Roberto C. Delgado. Business activities include vessel agent services, seafarer manning, training, and cadet education, as well as other logistics businesses. NYK Receives Visit from the Philippine Maritime Industry Authority https://lnkd.in/gF9kpYyu On October 2, NYK welcomed to its head office in Tokyo three officials overseeing training policy at the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) of the Philippines Department of Transformation. The visit was attended by Nobuhiro Kashima, NYK senior managing executive officer, and Hisaya Higuchi, NYK managing executive officer, among others. During the meeting, NYK introduced new technologies, decarbonization, and education in the maritime industry. NYK also presented information on the Designing the Future of Fully Autonomous Ships Plus (DFFAS+) consortium in which four NYK Group companies are participating as part of MEGURI2040, an autonomous ship project promoted by the Nippon Foundation. In addition to an explanation of the progress of the "NYK Group Decarbonization Story" released in November 2023, the presentation included the history of the NYK Group's efforts to acquire and develop maritime human resources in the Philippines, as well as a presentation on the NYK Digital Academy, a human resources development program established in 2019 and implemented by employees volunteering to participate. MARINA provided comments and advice on each presentation by program participants, considering the situation in the Philippines, and confirmed the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors and mutual understanding across national borders for developing the international maritime community. Also joining the meeting to exchange opinions were 13 Filipino seafarers working at NYK's head office in Tokyo, Japanese employees in ship-technology-related departments, and Rashid Delgado, co-CEO of the Transnational Diversified Group (TDG), a long-time business partner in the Philippines. The visiting dignitaries also monitored a bunkering operation on October 4 at the port of Tahara in Aichi Prefecture between the LNG-fueled car carrier Plumeria Leader and the LNG bunkering vessel Kaguya. The Philippines is one of the world's leading exporters of seafarers, and NYK operates the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA) in the suburbs of Manila in collaboration with TDG. In addition, active Filipino seafarers also work onshore in Tokyo, making the Philippines a very important partner for NYK. This initiative was an opportunity to reflect on seafarer education policy and training related to new technologies in the shipping industry, which is undergoing technological innovation such as research and development into autonomous vessels and next-generation fuel vessels. NYK will continue to maintain a good relationship with the Philippines and actively promote education and training for seafarers through public-private partnerships.
