    I am honoured to have volunteered to plant our HR Group Tree (a fir tree!) on 26 December 2024 in Yunomori forest, Gotemba City! We were blessed with great weather and the sight of Mount Fuji was beautiful! I had read about NYK’s Yunomori project from the press release, and it was amazing to be able to visit and participate in it as well! Maniwa san and Okita san welcomed us with warm hospitality, and with their guidance, we were able to quickly get started on planting our fir tree - cutting tree branches, conditioning the soil, trimming leaves and more! They also gave us a tour of the Yunomori forest, the accommodation room, the private ceremonial room, which I believe is an old house that has since been completely refurbished. We also learnt about Yunomori’s future plans and activities and forge friendships in the process! As a city person, who grew up in commercial high-rise buildings and knows little about forestry, being in nature and seeing Cedar, Cypress trees was truly an unique and educational experience for me! I hope our firtree grows healthy and I would love to return to visit our tree! It is my sincere wish that many more NYK Group employees will have the opportunity to participate in this meaningful and wonderful activity of environmental preservation!

  • NYK Group’s Top News Stories for 2024 Dec. 26, 2024 Deepening core businesses and developing new businesses by implementing ESG management Under its medium-term management plan, now in its second year, NYK has been aiming to further enhance its corporate value by deepening core businesses and developing new businesses based on ESG management. In addition to implementing measures related to safety, the environment, and human resources as important materialities, the corporate group has been playing its role in energy transition, a societal demand. Specifically in its core businesses, NYK signed a memorandum of understanding with an Indonesian state-owned company to cooperate in liquefied CO2 and LNG transportation and ship management (June) and agreed with ENEOS Ocean to acquire businesses other than crude oil carriers (July). Additionally, NYK opened the Akita School of Wind and Sea in January for training related to offshore wind power generation. Furthermore, NYK completed the world's first commercial ammonia-fueled tugboat, took measures to establish an ammonia supply chain, made progress in liquefied CO2 transportation technology, and established a production system. As a corporate group that develops logistics businesses centered on ship operations, we have been promoting the decarbonization of logistics, which is the foundation of many industries, in cooperation with shipyards, marine-equipment manufacturers, partner companies in Japan and overseas, and local governments. These efforts were published in October in "Progress Report 2024,” an annex to the NYK Group Decarbonization Story, which summarizes the full scope of the NYK Group's decarbonization efforts and progress and provides examples of co-creation. The following story was released on December 26: “VOL.20 Co-Creating a Better Future at a Manufacturing Site” https://lnkd.in/gTH2NR4t In August 2024, the world's first ammonia-fueled tugboat, Sakigage, was completed after the difficult task of converting the vessel’s fuel propulsion to ammonia from LNG.   • NYK’s Diversity and Inclusion Efforts Recognized for a Second Consecutive Year with Best Workplace 2024 D&I Award Respecting the diversity of human resources and creating an organization in which everyone can play an active role On December 18, NYK was presented with a Best Workplace 2024 D&I Award, one of Japan's most significant awards certifying companies committed to diversity and inclusion (D&I). This was the second straight year for NYK’s D&I to be recognized. Established by JobRainbow Co., Ltd. in 2021, the award aims to realize a society where D&I is commonplace by updating "the way D&I should be" to meet the needs of the times and expand the number of D&I promoters in society as a whole. JobRainbow Co., Ltd. ranks a company's D&I efforts using a 100-item "Diversity Score" to place a company in one of four categories.* NYK received high marks in the gender gap, childcare/nursing care, disability, and multicultural criteria. Of the more than 35,000 employees in the NYK Group, approximately 80% are from overseas. Since last fiscal year, NYK has released its “CX Story” and implemented a variety of measures to promote an environment and workplace culture in which a diverse workforce can thrive. In September, NYK formulated the D&I Promise, and in October the president's message on gender diversity was distributed.   • New LNG Carrier Elisa Ardea Delivered to EDF 🎉 On December 3, the newly built liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Elisa Ardea was officially delivered. The vessel is owned by France LNG Shipping, a joint venture between NYK and Geogas LNG,1 and under a long-term charter contract with EDF LNG Shipping.2 The vessel was built at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. Elisa Ardea will be chartered to the EDF Group long-term (up to 20 years, including extension options) and will be engaged in LNG transportation under the ship management of Gazocean,3 a French ship-management company. Elisa Ardea is propelled by, dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engines4 manufactured by WinGD and features an advanced Turbo-Brayton refrigeration system developed by Air Liquide, which efficiently utilizes surplus boil-off gas. The 174,000 cubic meter capacity membrane-type tank, designed by GTT, is constructed using high-performance insulating materials that reduce the vaporization rate. 1 A subsidiary of the Geogas Group. The Geogas Group owns French-flagged LPG carriers and trades more than 7 million tons of LPG annually worldwide. 2 A shipping company that is a subsidiary of EDF and responsible for its LNG transportation. 3 A French ship-management company specializing in LNG jointly owned by NYK and Geogas LNG 4 Two-stroke large-bore slow-speed diesel engines able to operate on marine gas oil or boil off gas stored as liquid at cryogenic temperatures.   • NYK and Yusen Logistics to Introduce Platform to Manage GHG-Emission Reductions📈 👀 Jointly Supporting Customers' Scope 3 Reductions Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Yusen Logistics Co., Ltd. (YL) have introduced a digital platform for managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions*. The platform is provided by 123Carbon B.V. (123Carbon), a Netherlands-based startup working on decarbonizing the logistics sector. NYK and YL, a comprehensive logistics group, will use the platform to support the reduction of Scope 3** GHG-emissions by allocating to platform customers the GHG-emission reductions achieved through the use of alternative fuels in our ocean, air, and land transport services and issuing certificates confirming those reductions. Key Features of the Platform - Customers can monitor GHG-emission reduction methods and the alternative fuels used to generate the reductions. - The management and allocation of GHG-emission reductions are secured using blockchain technology to prevent data tampering. - The entire process, from calculating GHG-emission reductions to allocating, is verified by a third-party certification organization to ensure the platform's reliability and transparency. Background of Platform Introduction Achieving a decarbonized society is a global challenge that must be tackled head-on. Companies require close collaboration with customers, partners, and other stakeholders to reduce Scope 3 GHG-emissions from transportation. By leveraging our expertise as a comprehensive global logistics group, we will contribute to reducing GHG-emissions in customers' supply chains by launching a one-stop service that enables appropriate allocation of GHG-emission reductions created by each transport mode. * Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions GHG-emissions reduced by using alternative fuels compared to traditional fossil fuels. ** Scope 3 Indirect GHG-emissions associated with an entire corporate supply chain, including emissions that occur across the supply chain and outside the organization's direct control, such as raw-material sourcing, product transport, product use, and disposal. *** Airline partners Airlines reduce GHG-emissions by using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced from sustainable resources such as waste oil and plants.   • NYK and ENEOS Sign Agreement for Sale and Purchase of Marine Fuel with CDR Credits Created Through DACCS To procure credits from 1PointFive for five years starting in 2028 On December 11, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (“NYK”) and ENEOS Corporation (“ENEOS”) signed an Agreement regarding the sale and purchase of marine fuel with carbon dioxide removal credits (“CDR credits”) created through Direct Air Capture with Carbon Storage (“DACCS”). The Agreement stipulates that ENEOS will procure CDR credits from 1PointFive’s STRATOS Direct Air Capture plant in Texas, the United States that is scheduled to commence operations in 2025. These credits are generated by removing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it underground. ENEOS will then sell these credits, along with the marine fuel it supplies, to NYK for five years starting in 2028. DACCS is one of the negative emission technologies that achieves the removal of greenhouse gases (GHGs) that cannot be reduced by energy conservation or transition to next-generation fuels. This innovative technology contributes to achieving net zero emissions in the energy sector. NYK and ENEOS will continue to actively promote the development and dissemination of GHG emissions reduction technologies, including DACCS, to contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society. Based on the NYK Group Decarbonization Story published in November 2023, NYK is promoting CO2 emissions reduction toward achieving net zero emissions by 2050. This is being done by maximizing energy efficiency and transitioning from traditional fossil fuels to next-generation fuels such as LNG, ammonia, and methanol. Additionally, for residual emissions that cannot be eliminated through efforts to reduce emissions, NYK aims to achieve net zero CO2 emissions through a “reduction” and “removal” approach by offsetting emissions using CDR credits. 1PointFive is a Carbon Capture, Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS) company that is working to help curb global temperature rise to 1.5°C by 2050 through the deployment of decarbonization solutions, including Carbon Engineering's Direct Air Capture and AIR TO FUELS™ solutions alongside geologic sequestration hubs. Direct Air Capture can help marine companies advance their emissions removal goals during the transition period until low-carbon fuels become widespread and address residual emissions of alternative fuels.
