(日本語は下記です) Happy New Year 2025! This year, we’ve taken a different approach to our New Year’s greeting video—something a bit more creative and fun! We hope you’ll enjoy it. :-) Looking back on 2024, the world saw significant shifts in political dynamics and geopolitical balances. In Asia, Japan has been receiving increasing attention, not just as a tourist destination but also as a growing hub for international businesses seeking expansion. Amid this momentum, our company has been actively supporting global enterprises and government organizations in sharing their stories with the world. Last year, we also co-hosted and supported several international events aimed at fostering innovation between Japan and the global community. Our media platform, J-STORIES, dedicated to showcasing the latest innovations from Japan and across Asia, continued to grow in influence. In 2024, we welcomed more than 150,000 visitors from over 160 countries. Soon, J-Stories will expand beyond its English and Japanese editions with the official launch of a Chinese-language version, further broadening its reach across Asia. 2024 was also an exciting year for our video production work. We took on projects around the globe, including filming and reporting in the U.S. and Spain, among others. Domestically, we produced a 60-minute television program on inbound tourism in Japan to be broadcast widely across Asia, highlighting the richness of Japan’s culture and experiences for international audiences. Looking ahead, 2025 promises to be even more dynamic with several major events already in the pipeline: - In May, we will co-host an unprecedented international Unicorn conference, bringing together approximately 100 unicorn and soon-to-be-unicorn companies from across Asia, in partnership with organizations from Korea and Taiwan. - In June, PBMC will celebrate its 15th anniversary, and we plan to host a special event to express our gratitude to everyone who has supported us along the way. As we embark on this exciting year, we sincerely wish you good health, happiness, and success. We look forward to strengthening our connections and working together to make 2025 an extraordinary year!

Turning Waste into Green in the Desert!🌍🌱 A project led by Kyoto University's Professor Shuichi Oyama is transforming the Sahel region of Niger. Inspired by the sight of kitchen waste scattered across the desert, Oyama and his team turned this everyday waste into a resource to restore agriculture to the deserts. By spreading household garbage across fenced-off areas, covering it with sand, and letting natural processes take over, they’ve created verdant oases in the arid landscape. The project not only restores soil but fosters local agriculture, with the greened land producing food for villagers and livestock alike. 🐄 Even termites play a role, cultivating the earth as they dig through it to reach waste, helping break down the tough soil. This approach has the potential to reduce conflicts between livestock and farmers in Niger by reducing the number of wandering cows damaging crops, offering a vision of sustainable peace. 🌿💧 With plans to expand research and create an Environmental Research Institute in Niger, this is a shining example of how innovative solutions can revitalize communities and their ecosystems. Saitama-based Astra Food Plan has come up with a mouthwatering way to take a bite out of Japan's mountainous "hidden" food waste. Japan’s food loss, incurred when edible food is discarded, exceeds 5 million tons per annum, exceeding the total food aid given to starving people globally. When other food waste such as vegetables that don’t meet size and other specifications, surplus produce, and peelings and cores from food factories are included, that figure swells to approximately 16 million tons a year, according to Japan’s agriculture ministry. The “superheated steamer” utilizes this waste, using high-temperature steam to dry and sterilize unwanted food and quickly turn it into powder without affecting flavor or color. Thank you, Oguzhan Karagözoglu (カ. for posting a comprehensive wrap-up of our event! Really appreciate your sharing the details of this unique opportunity connecting Japan-based innovators to the world! For those interested in learning more, here’s our article on this event: https://lnkd.in/gWkt9EKu
1st Japan Global Innovators Forum (JGIF) - A quick PR wrap up on my part Two weeks ago, I attended the 1st JGIF where Japanese startups met international audiences. The #startups showcased their innovative solutions aimed at solving the world's most pressing #social and #environmental challenges to a panel of international experts, who assessed their potential for global #growth. The startups were divided into three categories: Age Tech, Disaster Tech, and Clean Energy. Quick summary of what I observed (Note: I missed some of the presentations not mentioned): 株式会社Magic Shields: Has developed a unique flooring material called Coroyawa, aiming to reduce the increasing number of fall-related injuries among the elderly in Japan. Assist Motion: In collaboration with Shinshu University, they focus on two main areas: human-friendly #wearable #robots for daily assistance and next-generation soft actuators. Their core product is a surprisingly lightweight wearable robotic suit, weighing in at just 2.9kg (?) if I recall right. Ability LTD: Aims to facilitate the re-fueling of Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs) by developing compact, lightweight hydrogen cartridges. Their core innovation involves portable hydrogen cartridges for enhanced mobility. Challenergy Inc.: Utilize a blade-less design called 'Magnus Vertical Axis' to generate electricity through the #Magnus effect, focusing on wind power generation without traditional blades. The forum was expertly moderated by Toshi Maeda and Sayuri Daimon. Photos were provided by Toshimasa Hijikuro from J-STORIES Feedback was provided directly by a diverse panel of industry experts and venture capitalists: Bjoern Eichstaedt | Yoko Kojima | Jan Lozek | Hirokazu Yamaguchi Partners and Supporters: Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TIB Partner), The Mainichi Newspapers, the Embassy of Spain's Office of Economic and Commerce, Pacific Bridge Media & Consulting Organizers: J-STORIES and mainichi future creation laboratory Location: Tokyo Innovation Base Pretty cool experiencing first hand what's happening on the 'tech x environmental x social' side of things in Japan.
