“The Tale of Genji ”is known as the world's oldest female literature. The author is Murasaki Shikibu, a poetess of the mid-Heian period. A historical drama depicting the life of Murasaki Shikibu is currently being aired, attracting even more attention. In Kyoto, there are places that trace the history of Murasaki Shikibu and her gravesites, which are well known as tourist attractions. One of them is Rozanji Temple in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto, where Murasaki Shikibu lived and wrote The Tale of Genji and other works. The morning glories in The Tale of Genji are modern-day bellflowers. In honor of Murasaki Shikibu, the garden of Rozanji Temple blooms with bellflowers from summer to early autumn. Autumn, when the leaves turn red, is also a good time to visit.
