“DE&I has become something that corporations need to embrace as part of their business strategy, not just because it is the right thing to do, but also because we need DE&I for growth.” Earlier this week, Mika Nabeshima, the Chief Sustainability Officer for Tokio Marine Group, spoke at a seminar entitled: “Investing in Gender Equality for a More Resilient and Dynamic Asia and the Pacific,” organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) the The World Bank Group (WBG), in partnership with the Ministry of Finance - Japan and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Mika recounted her personal experience building a career in a heavily male-dominated environment while also raising two children. She elaborated on the importance of having a robust support network, mentorship opportunities, and active collaboration from men united in a desire to close the gender gap. She also talked about the generational shift in attitudes toward women in the workplace. Labor participation rates are growing (72.4%, up from 50% in the 80s), although many women in Japan remain in vulnerable positions. We also see more men in their 20s and 30s getting deeply involved in childcare, in part thanks to the increased flexibility of post-pandemic hybrid work models. While these trends are cause for optimism, companies in Japan still have a lot of work to do. Tokio Marine Group is part of the 30% club, aiming for 30% female executive representation by 2030. We have designated DE&I as a strategic pillar for our growth and will continue taking steps toward building a more inclusive future. #DEI #GenderEquality #Leadership #TokioMarine

From 2018 to 2022, the average gap in economic losses and losses covered by insurance grew to over $100 billion per year; nearly 20% higher than the average over the last ten years. Many cities have comprehensive resilience strategies, but don't have the capital or resources to proactively create resilient project portfolios that are attractive to investors. We are partnering with the Resilient Cities Network to support cities to develop holistic portfolios of resilience projects. As Lauren Sorkin, Executive Director of Resilient Cities Network, puts it: "We need to put cities back in the driver's seat, empowering them to attract investments that will allow their communities and businesses to thrive, resilient to whatever shocks and stresses may come. Strategic investment and policy change that builds resilience is more urgent than ever. The partners aligning for the Taskforce are well-placed to do just that." Through this new partnership, our Group companies will provide expertise and support to the Taskforce with a focus on developing commercially viable finance and insurance solutions for project portfolios that enhance climate resilience in more than 100 cities. "The global risk landscape is becoming more volatile," says Brad Irick our Co-Head of International Business. "The world needs better solutions for risk management, mitigation and recovery. Finance and insurance play a critical role in helping to rebuild people's lives and businesses in the wake of devastating events. By partnering with cities to provide support where it's most needed, we can develop solutions designed to weave resilience into the fabric of society. Our commercial partnership with R-Cities will enable us to harness our 140+ years of expertise to find innovative solutions that help strengthen urban resilience." #insurance #cities #resilience #TokioMarine

We are now halfway through Future Generations Month, and are delighted to present a third project from one of our Group companies: the 80K Trees project, by Philadelphia Insurance Companies in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation 🌳 In areas where natural forest regeneration is difficult, tree planting can go a long way in helping to jumpstart the cycle of native ecosystem restoration. Over the past ten years, this project has already led to the planting of over 570,000 trees across the United States, including in forests devastated by wildfires. 🔗 If you would like to know more about our sustainability strategy and Future Generations Month, check out our website: https://lnkd.in/gxkcK6tp

You may think that diversity, equity & inclusion has very little to do with products like life insurance or disability insurance. But according to Thea Valero, David Shaw, Margaret Reid, Jennifer K Smith, and the other members of the DEI Council at Reliance Matrix, the matter is not so straightforward. As Margaret puts it: "What happens when a policy provision references your ‘husband’ or ‘wife?’ What about civil unions and same-sex marriages?” Our perspectives and understanding of social issues are constantly evolving, and as an industry, insurance must evolve as well. Find out more about how DE&I can reshape the employee benefits universe in our most recent article: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ghB3JRjd #Insurance #DEI #TMTogether
