Our embassies, like the State Department itself, are doing their part to minimize the very real effects of the climate crisis. The U.S. Mission to Japan, including the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, last year made the shift to 100% carbon-free electricity. Earlier this year, the White House honored the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo Japan and the State Department’s Greening Diplomacy Initiative with the 2024 Presidential Federal Sustainability Award for these efforts. Since 2023, the U.S. Embassy Bogotá, Colombia and the Consulate in Porto Alegre, Brazil, have replicated the model, and more are expected to follow over the coming year. It’s all part of the State Department’s Greening Diplomacy Initiative, our commitment to make our operations more energy efficient, modern, and cost-effective.
