Last week, World in You hosted an insightful study group as part of our "Governance for Impact" series -"OpenAI and the Challenges of Governance" - a subject that proved to be as complex as it is crucial in today's rapidly evolving tech landscape. We dove deep into the OpenAI case study, examining its steward-ownership model - a hot topic given recent developments that may reshape this structure. Key points of discussion: - Balancing technological innovation with social responsibility - Fair compensation for data providers in AI development - Reconciling non-profit status with innovation imperatives - Protecting individual rights while harnessing the benefits of technology We based our dialogue on three thought-provoking articles: Strengthening Boards to Navigate the Intersection of Profit and Purpose https://lnkd.in/e2acUw_s OpenAI in the Context of Steward-Ownership — Blog Post 1 on the “OpenAI Saga” https://lnkd.in/ezmQ5j8F Bringing Steward-Ownership to Life While Playing on the Field of Capitalism — Blog Post 2 on the “OpenAI Saga” https://lnkd.in/e5Jj8amn The diversity of perspectives from our participants enriched the discussion, particularly around creating exploitation-free systems and establishing data sovereignty for individuals. As we continue our "Governance for Impact" series, we're reminded of the critical need for ongoing dialogue and practical action to shape a future where technological advancement and human dignity coexist harmoniously. #AI #CorporateGovernance #TechEthics #StewardOwnership #WorldInYou Haruo Mizutani Yuki Omori @sadayo Kobayashi Takahide Maruki Maco Yoshioka Yoshitaka Tabuchi @azumi nozaki Mio Yamamoto

【Event Announcement on 9/30】For CSR and sustainability professionals! What's the next step to expand employee volunteerism? – A session to learn from global corporate practices, co-hosted by ETIC (Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities) and World in You. In our first session with ETIC's Mitsuhiko Yamazaki and Dirk Bischof from Hatch Enterprise UK, in June, we explored the trends in global companies leveraging employee volunteer programs not only for social contribution but also to enhance employee engagement, with case studies from the UK. Common challenges emerged, such as: "Why is participation always limited to a specific group?" and "How can we broaden the scope of participants?" (Pls also check insights from the reports by Dirk and Mitsuhiko: https://lnkd.in/e5std5-U) For this second session, we are excited to welcome guest speakers Katsuya Sato from American Express International Inc. and Aki Matsuyama from Kindryl Japan , who lead employee volunteer initiatives at global corporations. They will share insights on how their companies have adapted volunteer programs in the post-COVID hybrid workplace and the challenges they currently face. Don't miss this unique opportunity to hear about real-world, ongoing practices! This is a valuable chance to connect with purpose-driven corporate leaders. We hope to see you there! Date: Monday, September 30th, 18:00-19:45 Location: Roppongi, Tokyo Details and registration: https://lnkd.in/e4k4AjDy #CSR #Sustainability #EmployeeEngagement #CorporateVolunteer #GlobalPractices #LeadershipNetworking #HybridWorkplaces #ETIC #WorldinYou Mishiro Yuko

World in You had the pleasure of cohosting a workshop with Dirk Bischof and ETIC (Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities) on corporate and employee engagement last week. The event brought together sustainability leaders from various industries, and it was truly insightful to discuss the common challenges faced by many companies and brainstorm solutions collectively. Many thanks to Dirk Bischof for sharing your experience and excitement for corporate engagement, Mitsuhiko Yamazaki and ETIC (Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities) team members for leading the event, and Mishiro Yuko for the coordination and interpretation! Thank you to all those who joined us! Excited for our second workshop this evening in Tokyo! Learn more about our sessions here: https://lnkd.in/exAEXXiQ
This week I had the huge pleasure to lead a workshop in Tokyo together with my colleagues from ETIC (Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities) and World in You. We got to speak to some of Japan's biggest companies about their corporate #volunteering activities and challenges. Some of the biggest challenges were: - Engaging a broad staff base beyond those who always volunteer (to those volunteers who go beyond --> we know who you are and we LOVE YOU for being volunteer ambassadors!!!) - Implementing volunteering as a company policy, with dedicated, paid-for time off (vs having to squeeze it into daily work) - Measuring the impact corporate volunteering has in the workplace We've also come up with some initial solutions, which the participants got to share in groups, knowing that they are their best support network already: - Working with senior leaders as role-models who need to be seen volunteering their time in the community - Implementing volunteering policies into HR contracts (e.g. 2-days volunteering/ year) - Capturing volunteering data using e.g. Benevity and unlocking benchmarking capabilities as well as aligning volunteer & corporate giving capabilities This workshop was one of the highlights for me on this current Japan trip. I was able to share some of the best practice approaches from the UK, especially around the implementation of the UK Social Value Act and how we work with our partners such as UBS, NatWest Group, Yum! Brands, eBay, Ares Management Corporation and many more. Corporate engagement with society is no longer a 'nice to do' but is becoming more and more critical to achieve much needed progress towards shared societal and environmental objectives (e.g. SDGs, Social Value, ESG...please pick your acronym) and we need to go from achieving shareholder value to unlocking stakeholder value on a much deeper level. The world depends on it! As always, very thankful to the team at ETIC, World in You and the many people who came. As we ran out of seating capacity, here's to next week's workshops, one more time :) #TeamWorkMakesTheDreamWork #SDGs #ESG #Volunteering

Good reading on the role and culture of the board members - Asking questions (from curiosity and a healthy bit of skepticism, and especially uncomfortable questions) vs. command & control.
