Global Innovation Moai: When Entrepreneurs from Around the World Connect in Okinawa. 🌴 🍍 As part of the experience of the Startup Accelerator Bootcamp at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, we brought together entrepreneurs from 12 countries with local innovators, students, and researchers from the University of the Ryukyus. What made this #meetup special wasn't just the diverse backgrounds of the participants, but the authentic exchanges across cultures and languages. It was the Okinawan concept of #Moai in action - the building of lifelong support networks that promote a sense of community and harmony. 🕊️ As international founders shared their visions and local entrepreneurs offered insights into Japan's ecosystem, you could see these global innovation moais forming in real-time! #RyuLab #GlobalStartups #OIST #OISTInnovation #琉ラボ #琉大 Gil Granot-Mayer | Anna Nagamine | Caitlin Clouse | Shigefumi Asage | Kotaku Iha

🏃♂️➡️ 🏃♀️➡️ Sometimes you need to get out of the lab to understand what customers need. Entrepreneurs from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology traded their research spaces for Naha's bustling financial district to gain invaluable insights into the real-world challenges facing local businesses and communities. 🌟 Vishnu Sankar of Astrek innovations discussed the role of smart robotics to assist patients in rehabilitation centers 🌟 Manas Kala & Anh Ngo of Veritus queried how AI software might be used to improve workflows 🌟 Abhishek Dutta & Swastika Paul of ExSURE PVT. LTD. exchanged information about next-generation, targeted cancer treatments 🌟 Jasel Alvarez Gaona of Circular Powder gained insight into the market potential for health supplements based on Okinawa's natural resources 🌟 Khashayar Misaghian & Hiroyuki Saito of Sage-Sentinel Smart Solutions 株式会社 shared ways to help seniors live independently and safely By stepping out of the lab and into the community, these entrepreneurs are ensuring their innovations don't just advance science – they address the real needs of people and the planet. They are also making the connections necessary to bring these solutions to the market. 👩🔬 👩🎓 🧑🔬 👩⚕️ In recognition of UNESCO International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate one of our own, Dr. Andrea Pensado, who has been instrumental in shaping technology development programs at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology! Andrea has masterfully led the OIST Innovation Proof of Concept Program for the last 4 years, supporting the transformation of innovative ideas from the university into commercial realities. Her unique blend of scientific expertise, combined with her talent for strategic operations, has been invaluable to the OIST innovation ecosystem. 🧬 🔬 As a scientist-turned-innovation leader, Andrea embodies what this day represents: women breaking barriers and building bridges between scientific discovery and real-world impact. Her management of the portfolio of technologies in the #POCprogram and mentorship of entrepreneurially-minded researchers showcase her commitment to advancing science beyond the lab. While Andrea's next chapter will take her away from Japan, the place she has grown to love, her impact on our programs and the young researchers she's mentored will continue to ripple through the #OIST community. She is setting a great example for #women and #girls aspiring to careers in #science and #innovation! 🎉 Lauren Bic Ha | Anna Nagamine | Angela Ares | Ivana Kurečić | Mari Seto | Daisuke Kaga | Takanari Ichikawa | Gil Granot-Mayer #WomenInScience #GirlsInSTEM #WomenInInnovation #OISTInnovation

♨️ How do marine heatwaves impact aquaculture? A new study led by Roger Huerlimann in the lab of Professor Timothy Ravasi at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology explores how heat stress affects the Malabar grouper, a commercially and ecologically significant fish. The research reveals that even after a four-week recovery period, heat stress leaves lasting marks—altering the fish's gut microbiome and downregulating digestive and mitochondrial functions. These findings underscore the need to develop countermeasures in fisheries and aquaculture to deal with warming sea temperatures. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eq93zMtN 🔬 Science + 💡 Innovation = A more resilient aquaculture industry! To put these research findings into practice, Roger established EbiSeq, a project supported by the #OISTInnovation Proof of Concept Program. EbiSeq (pronounced "eh-bee-seek") aims to revolutionize shrimp farming by developing environmental nucleic acid (#eNA) biomarkers as non-invasive, cost-effective, and scalable tools to monitor shrimp activity and pond health. The team, including Shannon Kjeldsen, is tackling key challenges in the 9T JPY shrimp aquaculture industry: optimizing feed, detecting disease early, and ensuring sustainable aquaculture practices. 🦐 Learn more about #EbiSeq and our innovation efforts: https://lnkd.in/eRp2-3tP If you're working in fisheries, aquaculture, or environmental monitoring, let's connect and explore how EbiSeq's approach can help solve your problems. 🤝 #OIST #Aquaculture #ClimateChange #MarineScience #ShrimpFarming #Sustainability Gil Granot-Mayer | Andrea Pensado | Angela Ares | Daisuke Kaga | Ivana Kurečić
