Yesterday, during a radio talk show at Ruben FM, right-holders from Action for Sustainability Initiative together with a Community Health Promoter (CHP) engaged in a comprehensive discussion about the various forms of gender-based violence (#GBV) prevalent in our society. We covered topics such as sexual and gender-based violence (#SGBV), physical violence, and emotional violence. We delved deep into #SGBV, highlighting cases, and discussed measures to hold perpetrators accountable, including the legal framework for reporting such cases.
The right-holders explored the broader impacts of GBV, such as economic constraints and stress. As a person with a disability (#PWD), I shared insights on the vulnerabilities of PWDs to SGBV, emphasizing the need to stop all forms of violence, regardless of disability status, HIV/AIDS status, or any other factor.
In the past three months, approximately over 97 #women have been killed due to GBV. During these 16 days of activism, we stand together to say no to all forms of GBV and there's no excuse for GBV. It's time to break this cycle and demand a safer society for everyone.

Under the #WeLead project, Action for Sustainability Initiative brought together our right holders who are resilient #PLHIV & #PWDs from Mukuru Kwa Ruben and Kibra for their final mentorship and mental wellness session of the year. 💚
These sessions are not just gatherings—they are safe spaces where stories of strength meet guidance, and laughter intertwines with healing. For many, the weight of stigma and discrimination can crush the spirit, and mental health often becomes the unseen wound. In Kenya, over 50% of #PLHIV report experiencing significant mental health challenges, young women with disabilities face 2 to 3 times more mental health risks due to compounded societal barriers.
But hope blooms in the smallest of actions. Studies show that structured mental health interventions and mentorship programs can help reduce these worrying trends, fostering #resilience and #hope. 💪

📢 🚨 As #HIV rates soar among Kenya’s young people, particularly in urban slums, the urgency for targeted interventions has never been clearer. Through the We Lead project, Action for Sustainability Initiative collaborates with Hivos/Hivos SEA & the Centre for the Study of Adolescence to bring essential sexual health awareness to Nairobi’s Kibra and Mukuru Kwa Ruben slums. This initiative focuses on empowering youth, particularly young women, to advocate for their rights and make informed decisions and build resilience against exploitation and health risks particularly around HIV.
Recent statistics from TV47 show that young people (ages 14-34) make up 74% of all new adult HIV cases, rising from 51%, with women facing the highest risks. Many young women in these areas, pressured by #economic hardships, fall prey to older men(#wababaz), further fueling these trends.
At Action for Sustainability Initiative, we are committed to empowering young people through a holistic approach. Our dedication to advocating for sexual health awareness aims to break cycles of misinformation and #stigma, equipping #youth with the #knowledge they need to make #informed choices. We create community spaces for open, #stigma-free conversations on sexual health, fostering an environment where young people can engage, learn, and build resilience together.
