We aspire for an Africa where evidence is used consistently to transform lives.
About us
In 2009, the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) was established as an African-led, regional non-profit policy think tank to help bridge the gaps between research, policy and practice in the areas of population change, public health, and the environment in Africa. The purpose of AFIDEP’s work is to contribute to sustainable socio-economic development by enabling the formulation of policies and programme interventions that are informed by sound research evidence in these focus areas.

“As we invest in irrigation, let’s be mindful of the potential public health implications.” This key takeaway emerged on 16th December 2024 in Blantyre, Malawi during our dissemination event under the Shire Valley Vector Control (Shire-Vec) project, which focuses on controlling vector-borne diseases in Malawi's emerging agricultural systems. The event, themed “Integrating Vector-Borne Disease Control and Management in Irrigation Farming in Malawi,” provided a platform for feedback on preliminary findings from two studies: 1. Vector-Borne Disease Control and Management Policies in Irrigation Areas in Malawi 2. Vector-Borne Disease Control in Agricultural and Irrigation Areas in Sub-Saharan Africa The dialogue provided insights into strengthening coordination between agriculture, health, and water sectors to effectively address vector-borne disease risks and ensure safer irrigation practices. Participants included: National and district representatives from the Directorate of Irrigation, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Water and Sanitation, and Ministry of Education, and Environmental Affairs Department, funders of irrigation schemes, researchers and entomologists from universities and independent bodies.
