From tracking my organic coffee’s supply chain to finally making medical records portable, blockchain’s use cases are more practical (and profitable) than ever. And don’t get me started on decentralized finance (DeFi) and gaming—I mean, earning real cash for in-game loot? Sign me up! These tech trends show blockchain isn’t just hype; it’s a foundation of modern systems. Investing in these real-world applications could be like finding a golden ticket in the blockchain lottery—if you play it right. Here’s my take on blockchain's mainstream appeal and its sneaky way into our everyday lives. From transparency in food supply chains to secure medical records, blockchain is transforming the way we think about data and trust across industries. It’s no longer just about Bitcoin; think more “invisible backbone” of the systems we rely on. For example, grocery giants like Walmart use blockchain to let you track a product’s journey—imagine tracing a jar of organic honey all the way from the farm!  In healthcare, companies like AfyaRekod are tackling secure patient records, aiming for a world where I could access my medical history with a click, no paperwork hassle. And who could overlook DeFi? With decentralized finance, we’re talking about lending and earning interest with fewer hoops to jump through than at a bank. Sure, it’s got risks—DeFi isn’t exactly the savings account grandma told you about—but it’s a game-changer. So, if I’m thinking long-term, I’d focus on where blockchain actually solves problems, like logistics, data security, and maybe even entertainment. Afya Rekod held a two-day workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining in Health Insurance on the 13th and 14th of November 2024, at BON Hotel Octagon, Jahi, Abuja. Participants from 26 states across Nigeria took part in the event. The one thing we are not talking about this election is Healthcare (and it's a huge mistake) Ok maybe that is not totally true. Maybe women's reproductive rights, the high cost of drugs and the ongoing opioid epidemic linked to border insecurity, are “kinda” healthcare related. But it is definitely not like previous election cycles where ACA (Obamacare), single payer and other ideas, were a central topic for the political campaigns. Why is that and why should we care? (yes, I will mention AI and blockchain). 1/ Maybe because most people (60% according to KFF) got used to ACA and are pretty much happy with it. https://lnkd.in/es7jJEXi 2/ Maybe because baby boomers (the most vocal healthcare voters) are happy with the public (traditional) and private (Medicare Advantage) options of Medicare https://lnkd.in/eEq2Gu-4, even though Medicare Advantage has settled a whopping $2.7B for fraud. https://lnkd.in/e5v32Ep8. 3/ Maybe, and this is the worst reason, people don’t really understand (or care) about the massive centralization of the healthcare industry. A centralization which not only makes healthcare unaffordable (it is the lead cause of personal bankruptcy), but at the same time offers to insurers, drug and device companies and for-profit hospitals profits of over $2.1T! But what’s the big deal, you may ask? Healthcare is a for-profit business and a 5yr average ROI of 64% for shareholders is pretty sweet, though the ROI for stakeholders- not so much. https://lnkd.in/eieYzpPV The problem of not talking about how to fix health (and the point of my post) is that we are not designing solutions, which IMHO are quite straight forward. They all boil down to incorporating in whatever platform the self-ownership (sovereignty) of personal health data (yup, tokens too). By including us in the $4.3T economic activity we shift citizens from being stakeholders into shareholders involved in industry oversight. This not just puts some brakes on government waste or corporate greed, but more importantly (and I say this often) transforms us from being health service users into health AND wealth producers. Owning health data increases transparency, accountability and responsibility, and impacts both personal health policies (like going to the gym) and public health ones (like providing prenatal care). Finally and especially in this age of AI explosion, it is clear that only we are invested in ethically stewarding our data, and it would be nice for once that we too, would benefit from the monetary and non-monetary gains of AI. How do I know? Because together with John Kamara, Irene Phoebe Kiwia, Bendon Murgor Ronald M Harris, MD, MBA, FAAD and others at AfyaRekod, we’ve already built it– a self owned health information exchange (below). And if we can do it here in Africa, we can do it anywhere!

The journey to create a data driven healthcare ecosystem is a significant industry game changer. Data is key for us to achieve preventive and outcome driven healthcare for our population inspite of our limited infrastructure. Really excited to have hosted the world bank team led by Marelize Gorgens Prestidge and Bernard Olayo as we discussed data driven healthcare focused around the following areas. Population risk management Surveillance and disease monitoring Patient driven healthcare outcomes Financial modelling using data from Primary healthcare facilities Pandemic monitoring and prevention Community healthcare workers. Digitization of connected healthcare ecosystem. It was a pleasure showing them what we have built, and our approach to a data driven ecosystem using the patient as the common denominator. Also a big thank you to the the Nigeria health sector team for paying us a visit as well.
