We celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) by hosting an inclusive gathering with persons with disabilities and their caregivers from our safe spaces in Kibera and Mukuru Kwa Reuben. The event, held in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, aligned with the 2024 theme, "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future." Participants while engaging in discussions complemented a program we have been implementing over the past year. Our disability program and sessions, primarily targeting girls and women in informal settlement catchment areas, have focused on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). These sessions have not only emphasized independence and championed inclusion but have also equipped participants with practical survival skills. Through proper training, they have learned to make reusable sanitary towels and diapers, fostering self-reliance and sustainability within their communities. Joining the girls to discuss pressing issues were Dr. Frida Nduati, a representative for persons with disabilities on the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital Board, and Future Mukiri, a disability champion from Mukuru Kwa Reuben. They addressed questions on the accessibility of government services and clarified available policies, providing valuable insights and guidance to participants. Their contributions underscored the importance of leadership and advocacy in driving inclusion. Cheshire Disability Services Kenya #healthcareaccesibility #disabilityinclusion #IDPD2024

We have today hosted a roundtable on disability inclusion in healthcare in Kisumu, bringing together Kisumu county officials, healthcare professionals, representatives of persons with disabilities, and youth advocates. This interactive event is part of the final phase of our research on the Availability, Accessibility, Acceptability, and Quality (AAAQ) of healthcare services, covering three counties: Nairobi, Kisumu and Kilifi. With Nairobi’s session completed last month, we are now looking forward to wrapping up this phase with a final roundtable discussion in Kilifi before the year ends. At our recent safe space gathering in Mukuru-kwa-Rueben, we launched a hands-on training program designed to teach young girls and women with disability on how to make reusable sanitary towels and adult diapers. During the initial sessions, participants mastered essential skills such as material selection, basic sewing techniques and designing guided by our team of facilitators. Over the past year, our close work with these participants has highlighted the financial strain that costly disposable hygiene products, like adult diapers and sanitary towels, place on families and caregivers. Our goal is to enable participants produce reusable hygiene products not only for personal use but also to help others in similar situations who may lack access to these necessities. #sanitarypads #skilldevelopment #empowerment #disabilityinclusion #safespaces #communitysupport

Situated in the eastern part of Lake Victoria in Homa Bay County, Mfangano Island faces unique challenges due to its remote setting. Accessing maternity services was once a daunting journey for expectant mothers, who often traveled several kilometers by small, handmade wooden boats across open waters to reach care on the mainland. Today, with the establishment of Mfangano Ubuntu-Afya Kiosk, women and other members of the community can access essential services closer to home. Science Africa recently visited and covered our Ubuntu Afya Kiosk, spotlighting how our partnership with the local community is transforming healthcare access in rural Homa Bay. East African Child Neurology Association (EACNA) through Afya Research Africa is hiring a Qualitative Researcher! Employment Type: Consultancy 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐍𝐀: The East AFrican Child Neurology Association (EACNA) has been working in partnership with British Paediatric Neurology Association (BPNA) and Kenya Paediatric Association (KPA) to offer Paediatric Epilepsy Training in Kenya (PET). It is important to understand the impact of the PET training on knowledge and practices of health workers who have undergone the training to help inform epilepsy care and capacity building strategies, and define resource allocation. We seek to undertake an evaluation to determine the effect of PET training on knowledge, practices and capacity development in paediatric epilepsy care amongst PET course alumni; exploring barriers to implementation of best-practices in paediatric epilepsy care by the PET course alumni; and examine opportunities to improve training. 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: We are seeking an experienced Qualitative Researcher to undertake this important research assignment. The ideal candidate will have strong skills in qualitative data collection and analysis and will be responsible for ensuring the accurate and thorough gathering of insights that align with the research objectives. 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: • A degree in a healthcare-related field such as nursing, medicine, public health, or health sciences is often essential to ensure the individual understands clinical contexts and healthcare systems. • Proven experience in qualitative research methodologies. • Strong skills in data collection and analysis. • Proficiency with qualitative research tools (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti). • Excellent communication and reporting skills. • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲: Interested candidates are invited to submit their resume, a cover letter detailing their relevant experience, and references to eacna@afyaresearch.org by 31st October, 2024.
