About us

The Amahoro Coalition is an African-led initiative convening multi-sector actors from across the region to accelerate private sector leadership in driving sustainable market-based interventions that advance economic inclusion for displaced populations. Our mission is to engage and enable the African private sector to expand access to education and livelihood opportunities for refugees while creating value for African businesses and society at large. Our vision is for refugees to be able to lead lives of dignity and achieve their full potential, ultimately paving the way to more inclusive development and peaceful prosperity throughout the African continent. • Our Private Sector and Client Service Unit teams held an engaging info session with students USIU-Africa. This event provided a platform to connect, exchange ideas, and discuss pathways to internships and meaningful employment opportunities. These students, many of whom are already entrepreneurs, are pursuing diverse degrees in fields such as Accounting, International Relations, Applied Computer Technology, and Psychology. At Amahoro Coalition, we are dedicated to bridging the gap between education and employment by fostering private sector connections that enable young people to thrive in their careers and contribute to building resilient communities.

  • During the Africa Financial Industry Summit (AFIS) 2024, Amahoro Coalition hosted a pivotal roundtable discussion with key stakeholders in the financial industry, including representatives from Wave, Ecobank, InTouch Group, Bamboo, Orange Money Group, Asafo & Co, Baobab Group, Express Union Group, Sparkle, National Bank of Rwanda, Bank of Cairo and Banco Millennium Atlantico etc. The focus? Exploring market entry strategies for financial services in Africa’s underserved markets.  Led by the insightful Kwadwo Adjei-Barwuah, Head of Investment at Growth Investment Partners (GIP), our conversation highlighted a critical opportunity: currently, only 38% of adults in developing economies hold a savings account, and around 75% lack access to any form of insurance. These figures present a compelling case for financial institutions to innovate and offer tailored products to meet the needs of these communities.  We also talked about the 45 million Africans who were currently displaced and the need for Financial Institutions to design products that transcended siloed regulations but rather to challenge the status quo by providing opportunities to all regardless of national boundaries. Our discussion centered around three essential pillars:   1. The factors that financial institutions must consider before entering these underserved markets.  2. Collaboration and partnerships play a vital role in ensuring effective market entry.  3. Leveraging technology to foster successful market penetration.  To turn the discussion into actionable steps, all participants agreed to explore ways to build meaningful and productive partnerships while doing our part to realize a holistically prosperous and inclusive continent.  Together, we can pave the way for a more inclusive financial landscape! #AmahoroCoalition #FinancialInclusion #AFIS2024 #Africa #Finance #Collaboration #Innovation

  • We have entered a new partnership with the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation (DRK) and the GrowthAfrica Foundation to identify and support 140 new social impact entrepreneurs across six African countries over the next four years. This initiative is made possible through a grant from the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, provided by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Through this collaboration, Amahoro will leverage its expertise and private-sector led approach to build the capacity and growth of ventures led by forcibly displaced individuals. The project will be implemented in 6 countries across Sub-Saharan and North Africa namely Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Ghana, and Egypt creating breakthrough opportunities for all. • “At Amahoro Coalition, we cannot stress enough the urgent need for the African private sector in conjunction with governments and regional bodies to work together to expand educational and employment opportunities to refugees. • Last week we hosted a business roundtable in Kigali, Rwanda that brought together private sector leaders, refugee entrepreneurs, and development partners to explore innovative ways the private sector can be a driving force in providing employment opportunities for forcibly displaced people. Together, we discussed how businesses in Rwanda can become employers of choice for refugees and boost employability and job creation in forcibly displaced communities. A big thank you to our partner Alight and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in Rwanda for helping make this event a successful one! • At Amahoro Coalition, we believe that enabling the free flow of goods and services across Africa—and strengthening its position in global trade—depends on the free movement of people, including the 44 million forcibly displaced across the continent. We invite private sector leaders, including those participating in the African Private Sector Roundtable at #BiasharaAfrika2024, powered by African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat to join us in creating market-based solutions for displaced communities and unlocking breakthrough opportunities for all!
