The rise of edible insects in the global food industry is a response to the urgent need for sustainable and environmentally friendly protein sources as the world population is projected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050. Traditional livestock farming's increasing environmental impact has made alternatives like crickets, mealworms, and grasshoppers more attractive due to their high protein content, low greenhouse gas emissions, and efficient feed-to-protein conversion. While insects have long been consumed in cultures across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, they are now gaining popularity in new markets as superfoods, incorporated into products like protein bars and snacks. Despite initial psychological barriers in Western societies, growing awareness of their environmental and nutritional benefits, along with innovative product development, is gradually shifting perceptions. Organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have played a key role in promoting edible insects, positioning the industry for significant growth and an important role in future food security and environmental conservation.

Due to safety concerns, the European Commission has decided not to renew the authorization for 10 smoke flavoring primary products that expired on January 1, 2024. However, some smoked flavorings may still be used until July 1, 2026, or until July 1, 2029, for traditionally smoked foods like cheese, meat, processed fish, and fish roe. The Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2067, amending Regulation (EU) No 1321/2013, removes 10 smoke flavoring primary products (SF-001 to SF-010) from the EU's authorized list due to safety concerns highlighted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The regulation impacts food exporters of cheese, meat, processed fish, and fish roe. , who must adjust their production processes accordingly within the transition period, as these smoke flavorings will no longer be permitted for use after the deadlines.

A significant concern in Kenya is the widespread use of highly hazardous pesticides, with 34% of those registered by the PCPB Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) having been withdrawn or heavily restricted in Europe due to their severe health and environmental risks. These pesticides, which include ingredients like Atrazine and Dicamba, are linked to various cancers, including leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and colon cancer. The risk is heightened by the fact that these chemicals persist in the environment, affecting not only farmers but also nearby communities through contaminated air and water. Additionally, only a small fraction of farmers (about one in six) wear full protective gear during pesticide application, increasing their vulnerability to these harmful substances. A 2023 report by Route to Food and Heinrich Böll Foundation, Nairobi highlighted the extensive use of these dangerous pesticides in Kenya's agriculture, where 310 pesticide products were applied across 26 crops. Alarmingly, nearly 63% of these products contain one or more highly hazardous active ingredients, many of which are banned in Europe. Moreover, the lack of safe pesticide storage practices, with only 15% of farmers keeping them away from children, further exacerbates the health risks. These findings underscore the urgent need for regulatory measures to protect public health and the environment in Kenya.
