Hi everyone! I am a rising senior at Syracuse University studying Supply Chain Management and Business Analytics. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to go on the 2024 Whitman Kenya Cultural Immersion Trip. The team just finished our ninth and final day of the trip, and here is what we did! We started the day having breakfast at a restaurant in Nairobi called Cultiva Kenya. More than just a dining spot, Cultiva is a haven where organic heirloom crops thrive and local talents are nurtured. Their collaborative environment fosters new culinary skills and empowers young minds, creating a unique and delicious dining experience. Every dish is made with locally sourced ingredients and reflects the beauty of the nature and community in Kenya. Next, we visited Michael Soi, a vibrant Nairobi artist renowned for his distinctive style and satirical commentary on Kenyan social, economic, and political life. We were lucky enough to be invited into his studio and learn about his story and art. His bright, two-dimensional paintings tackle often-ignored issues like intergenerational and interracial relationships, political greed, and international exploitation. Soi's works have been exhibited and collected globally, and he has participated in numerous international residencies. As the trip comes to an end, three main takeaways have stood out to me: sustainability, connection, and reflection. Many of the businesses we visited focus on sustainable sourcing and ethical employment. Their commitment to this concept was evident in both their actions and the enthusiasm with which they spoke about their values. The trip was full of connection as well. The whole team made unforgettable friendships with the business owners, employees, the staff at Homecare Retreat, and anyone else we met along the way! Lastly, this journey allowed the whole team to reflect on our experiences in Kenya and the United States in an insightful way that helped us connect what we learned in class to our visits. I am so grateful for this experience and have learned so much from our business partners that I hope to implement in my future endeavors! Syracuse University - Martin J. Whitman School of Management
