🌟 We're excited to highlight three new resources from NCN members Climate Action Platform for Africa (CAP-A), Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and BURN.
1. CAP-A’s Solar and Wind Energy Dashboard 🌞📊
Climate Action Platform for Africa (CAP-A), in collaboration with Dalberg Research, has launched the beta version of their Energy Dashboard - an online interactive platform. Using data from the Global Wind Atlas and Global Solar Atlas, the dashboard provides detailed renewable energy data across Africa, offering insights for stakeholders to facilitate decision-making and planning for green industry.
The dashboard offers:
i) Annual energy output as opposed to primary data such as windspeed or solar irradiance etc.
ii) The energy output is only reflected in areas where it is geophysically possible and economically feasible to install onshore wind and solar PV
iii) The data is provided at a 1kmx1km pixel level across the entire continent.
2. More Money, Fewer Problems: Closing Africa’s Climate Finance Gap, a report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) 💰🌍
Key insights from the report include:
🔹 $2.4 trillion is required until 2030 to meet Africa’s climate needs, but only 12% of this funding has been met or committed.
🔹 Macroeconomic uncertainty, opportunity cost of capital, and investor risk assessment—resulting in financing costs 5-6% greater than in comparable emerging markets—creates a major impediment to investment flow into green sectors.
🔹 In addition to the foundational work of improving macroeconomic conditions, a range of solutions exist for unlocking financing that can be actioned by investors, DFIs, multilaterals, and philanthropic funders.
🔹 Increasing Portfolio Value Creation (PVC) by equity investors is paramount to accelerating the growth of green sectors.
3. Carbon Credit Finance Can Bring Clean Cooking to Every Home in Africa, an OP-ED by Peter Scott, CEO of BURN. 🔥🏠
“Today, carbon finance alone can generate the capital needed to lead the clean cooking transition. For example, a $1 billion investment can deliver ~30 million stoves, generating enough carbon credit revenue over a 7-year period to repay the principal and subsidize an additional 50 million stoves, meeting Africa’s annual stove needs.”
