I had a very interesting conversation in Oxford, United Kingdom with Professor Myles Allen, Head of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics in the Department of Physics, University of Oxford, and Professor of Geosystem Science in the School of Geography and the Environment. His research focuses on how human and natural influences on climate contribute to climate change and risks of extreme weather. In 2005, Allen introduced the notion of a finite carbon budget, implying net zero emissions of carbon dioxide are necessary to halt global warming. He has been working on the implications ever since, most recently on the case for Geological Net Zero, or a balance between ongoing production of carbon dioxide from geological sources with carbon dioxide capture and geological storage. We need to stop fossil fuels from causing global warming before the world stops using fossil fuels. The solution is a credible carbon dioxide disposal plan applying all emissions. Is carbon capture and geological storage the best solution for Africa?

Our Head, Sustainability spoke at the Actuarial Society of Kenya (TASK) ESG Summit where she emphasized the importance of integrating ESG principles into business strategy and operations. Highlighting the business case for sustainability, she highlighted key issues around responsible banking and drew synergies between environmental, social and governance factors in organizations.   Further, she made a call to action for all financial institutions to embed best practices in ESG planning and reporting, coupled with the right systems, structures and partnerships. She acknowledged the need for specialized training on ESG in organizations and the need for the private sector to work closely with the government and the regulators to drive adoption and integration of ESG.   In closing, she affirmed our commitment to sustainability and advocacy for ESG practices across the industry.    We have aligned our sustainability strategy to our purpose which is to drive Kenya and South Sudan’s growth. By designing and implementing the right systems and solutions, we are making a positive impact in our communities inclusively and safely.   For a comprehensive view on our ESG approach, please click the link to access our 2023 Sustainability Report: https://rb.gy/0aihi2 Were Priscilla #StanbicBank #Sustainability #ESG

At The Actuarial Society of Kenya (TASK) ESG Summit 2024, Njeri Jomo, CEO of Jubilee Health Insurance, delivered a compelling keynote speech, urging the #financial services industry to move beyond buzzwords and take decisive action in integrating Profit Plus—her proprietary concept that redefined profitability as profitability with purpose. She emphasised the need for businesses to embed ESG (#Environmental, #Social, and #Governance) principles into their core strategies, highlighting the growing financial risks from climate-related disasters. Njeri showcased successful examples of #ESG in action, such as green lending and climate-resilient insurance products, demonstrating how Profit Plus could drive both #sustainability and business growth. She challenged industry leaders to set measurable ESG targets and turn obstacles into opportunities, stressing that the future of financial services depended on making these concepts a reality. The decisions made at that moment, she argued, would shape not only the success of businesses but also their legacy in contributing to a sustainable future. In concluding, Njeri underscored Jubilee Health Insurance’s commitment to the net-zero agenda, reaffirming the company's dedication to achieving carbon neutrality and integrating sustainable practices across all operations. She emphasized that this commitment is not just a strategic objective but a core component of how Jubilee aims to redefine the future of insurance—where #profitability and sustainability go hand in hand. ESG investing is like chess, the only difference is with each step taken in the direction of sustainability, one can achieve a better ending for our planet and one’s portfolio!" To enhance the ESG movement, financial and insurance institutions are best: Adopting ESG Investment Policy: Make decisions for investment and underwriting by considering ESG factors so that funded projects are sustainable and responsible. Creating Green Financial Products: Create and sell financial products such as green bonds, sustainability-linked loans or mutual funds with the purpose of increasing business sustainability. Emerging Risk Coverage: Provide insurance solutions for new forms of risk focusing on climate and socio-political issues such as flood or cyber-related risks to encourage better risk management among clients. #kenbright #kenbrightcares #ESGsummit
