Being in Kenya and East Africa for some time, we’ve seen firsthand how the dairy industry provides a lifeline to so many families. From small-scale farmers who rely on dairy as their primary source of income to the consumers who depend on milk as a staple, this sector plays a vital role in our communities. But lately, we've been reflecting on the role of brokers in the dairy value chain. On one hand, brokers connect farmers to markets, ensuring that milk reaches processors and, eventually, our tables. But on the other hand, there are real concerns about how much value these middlemen add versus how much they take away. Here’s what I see as the positives and negatives: ✅ The Positives: 1.Market Access for Smallholders: Many small-scale dairy farmers don’t have the means or connections to reach bigger markets. Brokers help bridge that gap, allowing them to sell their produce quickly and efficiently. 2.Streamlined Logistics: In rural areas with challenging infrastructure, brokers take on the heavy lifting of transportation, ensuring milk doesn’t go to waste. 3.Quick Cash Payments: We’ve met farmers who depend on the immediate cash that brokers provide—sometimes it’s the difference between keeping their operations running or having to shut down. 4.Lower Entry Barriers: Brokers take on negotiations, logistics, and relationships with processors, making it easier for smallholders to focus on their core work: dairy farming. ❌ The Negatives: 1.Reduced Farmer Profits: The middlemen take a cut that can significantly reduce what farmers earn, especially in a market where margins are already thin. 2.Compromised Quality: We’ve heard concerns about milk quality being affected when brokers prioritize quantity over quality, sometimes leading to compromised products reaching consumers. 3.Market Manipulation: There’s always a risk of brokers taking advantage of farmers, buying at low prices during a surplus and selling at high margins, leaving both farmers and consumers squeezed. 4.Dependence & Lack of Transparency: We’ve spoken with farmers who feel trapped in an opaque system, where brokers dictate prices and control access to markets. It’s tough to negotiate when you don’t have full visibility of the value chain. 🔍 We’d love to hear your experiences and thoughts: Do you think brokers are a necessary part of the dairy supply chain, or are they more of a hurdle? At FRESH Networks, we are dedicated to making safe, high-quality milk accessible to millions of families. The problem we address: Around 68% of all marketed milk in Kenya is sold in loose form through unregulated, untraceable informal channels, mostly to low-income families living in cities. Despite the serious public health risks of toxic contamination, adulteration, and milk-borne diseases (estimated to cost KES ~400 billion annually), these families are forced to opt for this product because safer milk is up to 50% more expensive per liter, or just isn’t available where they live or in their desired purchase quantities. Our solution: FRESH enables Dairy companies to enter this market segment directly and offer households flexible quantities of loose high-quality milk at attractive prices using a unique technology suite consisting of:  - Smart milk dispensing machines placed inside local neighborhood shops  - Smart handling equipment to transfer cold milk efficiently to ATMs - Smart logistics technology to efficiently plan and track ATM refilling operations with minimal losses - Real-time visibility over stock & quality levels, with smart sales forecasting models - Retail price & digital payment systems  - Consumer marketing & support tools - Network design, operations, and maintenance tools and services Why we believe this will work: We’ve developed this solution over the last three years working closely with Dairy industry partners, shopkeepers, regulators, and other stakeholders.
