About us
GROOTS Kenya is a national movement of grassroots women-led community-based groups (CBOs) and Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Kenya. GROOTS Kenya has invested in nearly 2,500 women-led groups across 14 counties out of the 47 where we have direct presence. Founded in 1995 after the fourth UN Conference on Women in Beijing, China, GROOTS Kenya began as a response to the lack of visibility of grassroots women in development processes and decision-making forums that affect them and their communities.

🌍 Human Rights Day in Chemolingot: A Step Toward Justice and Equality On 10th December, we joined hands with Baringo County Government , Diakonia, Christian Impact Mission, Legal Resources Centre (LTF), National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), in Chemolingot, Ripkwo Ward, Baringo County, to mark Human Rights Day. 🌟 A Proud Milestone The day’s highlight was the swearing-in of 24 paralegals trained by LTF. These local champions took an oath to combat harmful cultural practices, including female genital mutilation (FGM) and gender-based violence (GBV). This collaboration with the county government and justice teams represents a bold step toward building safer and more equitable communities. Baringo News #16DaysOfActivism | #HumanRightsDay | #EndGBV

Yesterday, 10th December, in collaboration with the Kitui County Government, we marked the culmination of the #16DaysOfActivism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Speaking at the event held at Kiukuni Primary School in Mutonguni Ward, Gender and Social Services CECM Phoebe Mutemi emphasized that the county government is working with various stakeholders to develop and implement policies addressing GBV. “These initiatives aim to provide platforms and opportunities for advocacy and engagement on women’s rights and protection,” she noted. Waziri Phoebe further encouraged women to report all GBV cases to ensure appropriate action is taken against perpetrators. She, however, expressed concern that many cases go unreported, perpetuating the cycle of violence. “Progress in combating GBV in our country has been slow. This underscores the urgent need for heightened advocacy, awareness creation, and improved policy implementation,” observed the county minister. Also in attendance were area MCA Hon. Benjamin Mulandi, representatives from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, the National Police Service, Anglican Development Services-Eastern, and other stakeholders. kitui government Hand in Hand Eastern Africa #16days | #EndGBV

What action are you taking to #EndViolenceAgainstWomen? As we culminate the #16DaysOfActivism against gender-based violence, let’s remind ourselves: gender-based violence is everyone’s business. It’s not a women’s issue or a problem for "others" to solve—this is a collective call to action for all of us. Over the last 16 days, GROOTS Kenya has been at the forefront, engaging communities through powerful dialogues, peace walks, and strategic collaborations with partners. Together, we've sparked critical conversations and ignited a movement toward safer homes, workplaces, public spaces, and even digital platforms. There is #NoExcuse for inaction when we witness violence. But the fight doesn’t end here. Your voice, your actions, and your partnerships are vital to creating a world where women and girls live free from violence. Will you join us? Let us amplify the message and ensure every corner of our society hears it loud and clear: violence has no place here. Let’s commit. Let’s act. Let’s make #NoExcuse the norm. As part of the Naivasha GBV Networking Cluster , we joined a powerful peace walk in Karagita estate, Kenya—an area flagged as a GBV hotspot. With support from the Area Chief, Assistant Chiefs Joseph Kang’ethe and Gichane, Elijah Njuguna from the Prisons Department, and local CSOs/CBOs, we raised awareness about the urgent need to combat the rising cases of GBV in the area. This is more than a walk—it’s a call to action! 💡 The fight against #GBV starts with YOU. Her Work, Her Worth, Her Voice As we mark the #16DaysOfActivism, we bring you voices from Laikipia’s rural farmers. Women who work tirelessly to feed their families and communities have opened up about the silent struggles they endure as small-scale farmers. 👉🏽 “When your business starts to succeed, it’s no longer yours; it becomes 'ours.' Suddenly, you lose control over what you’ve built with your sweat.” Milka Muchiku, Farmer. These stories highlight the hidden gender-based violence (GBV) many women face—economic disempowerment, control over their resources, and systemic inequities that stifle their potential. 🎥 Watch our video to hear their stories. 💬 Stand with us as we amplify the voices of rural women and demand an end to GBV in all its forms. 📢 Call to Action: Let’s fight for equitable access to resources and protect women’s rights. Share this message, start a conversation, and support policies that empower women farmers. #16Days | #EndGBV SeedChange / Sème l’avenir Seed Savers- Kenya Hivos International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) CGIAR CGIAR GENDER Impact Platform Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada Kenya Land Alliance(KLA) Landesa International Land Coalition PELUM Kenya Association

🌟 Empowering Entrepreneurs, Breaking Barriers: International Day of Persons with Disabilities This year, GROOTS Kenya proudly partnered with the Disability Resource & Information Center(DRIC), Nakuru County Government and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities under the theme: “Amplifying the Leadership of persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future” In attendance were 40 remarkable GROOTS Kenya PWD micro-entrepreneurs, who showcased their diverse businesses, including: ✨ Soap making ✨ Beadwork and crafts ✨ Fresh fruit vending ✨ Confectionery and snacks ✨ Shoemaking and more! Why It Matters: PWDs in remote areas often face limited access to essential services and opportunities due to discrimination, stigma, and cultural barriers. This event was a step toward: ✔️ Advocating for the rights and inclusion of PWDs ✔️ Raising awareness about accessibility challenges ✔️ Connecting PWDs with services like education, healthcare, and registration 💡 Join the movement! Let’s amplify the voices of PWDs, eliminate barriers, and build a society where ability—not disability—defines opportunity. #16DaysOfActivism | #IDPWD | #InclusionForAll Mastercard Foundation Kncci Nakuru Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) 4G Capital DT Global Grassroots Business Fund Jiinue Growth Program (JGP)
