AI THAT CARES, DARES, AND SHARES How can Artificial Intelligence revolutionise the work of NGOs and Civil Society Organisations while staying rooted in ethical practices? This question took center stage at the KIW - Fingo Artificial Intelligence Workshop, an event hosted by Fingo - Finnish Development NGOs and designed for NGOs and Civil Society organisations (CSOs). This workshop delved into the transformative intersection of AI, data collection, and digital media within the realm of international development. It offered NGOs actionable insights to strengthen their capacity and embrace forward-thinking solutions. The event was enriched by dynamic sessions led by experts Valitalo Mika, Peter Njuguna (ICT4D Specialist), Rosebellah Nyanchoka, PMP, and Caritta Seppä who shared their invaluable perspectives and strategies. Key highlights from the workshop: ✔️Principles for digital development: Solutions must be stakeholder-driven, designed with the people they serve, and grounded in the existing ecosystem for true impact. ✔️AI Integration with purpose: Participants shared use cases, emphasizing the need to solve real problems rather than deploying tech for tech’s sake. ✔️Data ethics: The workshop raised a red flag on the misuse of data, underscoring the monetary and legal implications outlined by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) in Kenya. ✔️Collaboration opportunities: The importance of partnering with the private sector while maintaining ethical standards was highlighted as a way to amplify impact. ✔️Golden advice: “Don’t walk around with a solution searching for a problem. Instead, seek out a solution with a problem in hand.” – Peter Njuguna This event focused on equipping NGOs and CSOs with tools, frameworks, and ethical practices to build a sustainable digital ecosystem. It encourages a problem-first approach to tech adoption, fosters collaboration across sectors, and ensures that people remain at the heart of every innovation. It’s essential to embrace these transformative opportunities while staying true to the principles of digital development. Together, we can build a future where technology works for everyone. COST OF SILENCE 1 in 3 women globally experiences physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. In Kenya, the situation is just as alarming: 📊 43% of women and 13% of men have experienced physical violence. 📊 13% of women have faced sexual violence, underscoring the critical need for innovative solutions to end Gender-Based Violence. This is why the InnoVate Against GBV by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Business Plan Contest is critical. By empowering entrepreneurs with mentorship and resources, JICA together with their partners NGEC and programme implementation partners, GrowthAfrica, are fostering innovative solutions to end violence. Start-ups such as Kuza Freezer | Beyond Refrigeration. and Data Lock are making strides by integrating survivor support and sustainable models into their businesses. For Kuza Freezer, they are working to eliminate GBV through economic empowerment. They are able to do this by offering small-scale fish producers' access to better markets, eliminating post-harvest losses thereby increasing their revenues, and consequently securing sustainability of their businesses. Their solar powered mobile freezers that provide on-the-go cooling to maintain fish freshness during transit to end consumers, is also a game changer in the fight to support economic empowerment of vulnerable groups. For Data Lock, through their tech driven e-Glow platform, they are empowering women by providing access to electric motorcycles (EM), training, and a supportive community. They eliminate the upfront cost of EM and accessories acquisition, enabling women to enter the gig economy and earn sustainable incomes. By doing so, they not only empower women financially but also address issues of safety, gender-based violence, and environmental sustainability. The time to act is now. What are you doing to amplify efforts during the 16 Days of Activism to create a safer, more equitable future for all? ENTREPRENEURS IN ACTION As part of the 16 Days of Activism, we spotlight how entrepreneurs are rising to the challenge of ending violence against women and girls. The InnoVate Against GBV by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in partnership with NGEC and implementing programme partner GrowthAfrica, is championing three key areas of action: ✔️Prevention: Businesses innovating to challenge harmful cultural norms. ✔️Response: Tools and systems that provide direct support to survivors. ✔️Empowerment: Promoting gender equality and creating opportunities for women. One inspiring example is Residence Technologies, an organisation that is making every community reachable through secure, accurate, and reliable smart addresses. They are challenging the status quo on personal data sharing, striving to revolutionise access to emergency response and service delivery. Their ultimate goal is to reduce the average response time from 162 minutes to under 15 minutes for every Kenyan, ensuring faster, more reliable support when it matters most. Entrepreneurship is a powerful tool for social change. What role can your business play in eliminating gender-based violence?
