🏞Forests naturally filter rainwater. Water from a forest is much cleaner than water from urban or agricultural land, 🌲🌴🌳Forests clean drinking water in a variety of ways. First, tree leaves and branches slow rainwater down before it reaches the forest floor, preventing erosion, especially during heavy downpours, 🌧Rainwater is then naturally filtered as it moves through the soil. Tree roots keep sediment from reaching streams and absorb nutrients that would otherwise pollute waterways, 🏞Even if they are far away from where surface water is pumped to provide supplies, forests help keep drinking water clean and safe, 🏞By protecting forest cover and native understorey, we preserve soil health and maintain our island community's delicate freshwater balance, Infographic: Transition Salt Spring Society #forests #ecosystems #science #gpi2050

Happy New Week! A key component to the success and thriving of school-going children is their nutrition. Kenya, like other countries globally, has been significantly impacted by climate change as evidenced by the prolonged drought experienced in 2024. To this end, Kenya Food Fellow, Sylvia Kuria 🇰🇪 has set out to address this challenge by including indigenous foods in their nutrition. Through her food systems action (FSA), Sylvia hopes to encourage collaboration with other stakeholders including the government, educational institutions and farmers. Sylvia’s FSA is also in collaboration with other Kenya Food Fellows, Auleria Apopo and Catherine Karanja. They show us what's possible when #foodsystems leaders come together to work on a common goal.

Developing and third world countries can accelerate their growth and escalate their GDPs if the resources are PROPERLY budgeted and implemented. 80% of these countries depend on agriculture and agricultural activities. SWOT analysis and FEASIBILITY studies should be a norm rather than an exception for any proposed project. Why we never utilize some God given gifts in the name of resources and maximum seize these competitive advantages over our peers usually marvels my understanding. The world population is increasing exponentially and people will ALWAYS eat and therefore need to make our hands dirty to feed this growing market.

Governor Mutula Launches State-of-the-Art Horticultural Aggregation Center and Packhouse in Wote, Makueni County has taken a monumental step towards transforming its agricultural sector with the official launch of an Horticultural Aggregation Center and Packhouse by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. The facility is set to enhance the processing, packaging and marketing of mangoes for both export and local markets. Strategically located near the Wote Police Station, the facility is set to revolutionize the mango value-chain in the county and serve as a central collection point for mangoes from local farmers, reducing post-harvest losses. It will also provide exporters with direct access to high-quality produce. Export mangoes will fetch Ksh. 12 per piece, while mangoes for the local market will attract between Ksh. 15 and Ksh. 19 per kilo, ensuring fair prices for farmers. Farmers have been advised to notify their ward agriculture officers or ward administrators when their mangoes are ready for harvesting. This initiative will facilitate seamless linkage with buyers, maximizing profits for farmers. The aggregation center is equipped to handle large quantities of mangoes, ensuring efficient sorting, grading and packaging for local and international markets. The initiative is expected to boost incomes for farmers by providing a direct link to exporters, who previously faced logistical challenges in sourcing quality produce from the region. For any enquiries, please contact Mr. William Mwangi the agriculture officer in charge through 0756395050.

Agribusiness product pricing SHOULD be treated differently from other sector like service industry or FMCG industries due to their inherent RISKS. High value crops like herbs have higher risks and therefore prudent to factor gross margins of 30-40% in ones selling price unlike FMCG which can work with even less than 3% and still grow and scale up. The trick is in costings and getting it right from onset. As much as it is difficult and hard exercise, one has to determine product costs, variable costs, overheads, packaging cost etc. Agricultural products have hidden charges i.e costs and time lag between sowing a crop to harvest complicates and make it worse that most growers loose focus. The competitive advantages nosedive other farmers relative costs. Business plan helps to alleviate these challenges from onset but then records help monitor and track these costs in future. You can't bargain with what you don't know more about

the problem is the solution, if you can't change it, you need to change the way you look at it. Shifting Perspectives for Sustainable Solutions in entomopreneurship, Soil Health, Agroecology, and permaculture

Let’s Talk About Misused Labels: A Frustrated Clarification As we approach the end of the year, I can’t help but feel frustrated by how often critical terms like permaculture and agroecology are misused by individuals, NGOs, and donors. These aren’t just buzzwords—they represent specific, actionable frameworks that demand accuracy and respect. 👉 Agroecology is NOT an agricultural practice. It’s an ecosystem-based approach centered on governance, food sovereignty, resilience, and diversity. 👉 Permaculture is also NOT an agricultural practice. It’s a system design guided by three core values: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share. Without a well-thought-out design, it’s simply not permaculture. While they may seem similar, they differ: Permaculture allows for creativity, enabling customized designs tailored to unique contexts and encouraging innovation. Agroecology is a structured system with set principles, such as the absence of chemical inputs, that cannot be compromised. Unlike broader frameworks like organic farming, climate-smart agriculture, or sustainable land management, permaculture and agroecology take a very focused approach. As designers, we start with broad spectrums, then narrow down to specific goals to ensure flawless execution. This precision is what sets them apart. The misuse of these terms risks diluting their meaning and undermining their transformative potential. Words matter, and getting them right is crucial. Rant over—for now. What are your thoughts? Have you seen this happen too? Let’s discuss.
