About us
The KEMRI| Wellcome Trust Research Programme also known as the Centre of Geographical Medicine Research Coast (CGMRC) is one of the twelve centres of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). It is well known internationally for its work in tackling malaria and other infectious diseases, particularly bacterial and viral childhood infections. The Programme was formally established in 1989 as a partnership between KEMRI, Oxford University and the Wellcome Trust. It conducts basic, epidemiological and clinical research in parallel, with results feeding directly into local and international health policy It aims to expand the country's capacity to conduct multidisciplinary research that is strong, sustainable and internationally competitive. Strong community links are at the heart of the Programme, with an emphasis on capacity building and training to build scientific leadership in the region.

The Novel Extreme Weather Risk Insurance System for Kenya (NEWRISK) Project held a successful week long annual meeting from 2-6 December bringing together the project teams from KEMRI - Wellcome Trust and University of Oxford. The meeting concluded with the launch of its steering committee meeting with representation from MOH_Kenya, Council of Governors and Kenya Meteorological Department and Insurance Development Forum. The #NEWRISK Project is funded by NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) and is led by Dr. Benjamin Tsofa and Prof. Jacob McKnight and seeks to generate evidence that can inform health systems preparedness and recovery in response to climate change and extreme weather events. 10 years of making a difference! Today, the Clinical Information Network (CIN) celebrated 10 years of impactful work at the Stakeholders Dissemination Meeting. This event brought together paediatricians, nurse-in-charges, and HRIOs linked to CIN projects to reflect on a decade of dedication and collaboration. The meeting showcased findings from completed studies, provided updates on ongoing projects, and discussed future priorities to continue improving child health outcomes.
