George Drammeh Akelola, Assistant Manager of Projects and Dispute Resolution at KenGen Kenya, shared invaluable insights on the critical role of mediation throughout the project development cycle during a recent discussion. With his extensive experience in geothermal energy projects across East Africa, Drammeh emphasized how mediation is crucial at every stage of a project—from financing to procurement and implementation. He particularly highlighted the importance of early-stage mediation, where aligning the interests of local communities with project goals is essential for success. By involving communities and key stakeholders early on, KenGen has been able to mitigate resistance, build trust, and foster positive relationships that ensure long-term sustainability of its projects. Drammeh also pointed out that mediation is even more vital in international energy projects, where cross-border complexities and varying legal frameworks often create challenges. In these cases, mediation serves as a powerful tool to structure the issues, narrow down points of contention, and facilitate smoother transitions between different phases of the project. It’s clear that mediation isn’t just a tool for resolving disputes—it’s an essential element of effective project management that fosters collaboration, minimizes risks, and ensures the long-term success of projects in the dynamic energy sector. As part of my festive season break, my family and I had the privilege of visiting the iconic Sondu Hydroelectric Power Station in Nyakach, Kisumu County. Even while on leave, I could not resist the opportunity to dive into something I’m passionate about - renewable energy and its transformative role in powering our nation. Remember we were here just the other day to issue title deeds to communities in Gogo, Migori County. You can never get enough of this magic no matter how many times you see it. This time, it was a deeply insightful experience made even more special by the company of two incredible colleagues, the multi skilled and innovative James and Seth. Their knowledge and passion for energy development brought a new dimension to the tour. As always it was inspiring to see their dedication firsthand, and it reminded me of the collective effort it takes to keep the lights on in Kenya. Despite the holiday mood, the Sondu team graciously welcomed us and took the time to walk us through the facility, giving a blow by blow talk about the processes involved in harnessing hydropower. From the massive turbines and generators that generate electricity to the meticulous operations in the control room, every aspect of this station is a testament to innovation, teamwork, and precision. The festive season is often about gratitude, reflection, and celebration, and today, I felt all three. Gratitude for the hardworking teams like those at Sondu who ensure reliable, clean energy for millions of Kenyans; reflection on how far we’ve come as a country in embracing sustainability; and celebration of the people—like James, Seth, and the Sondu team—who make it happen every day. After this #BoxingDayTour, it will be easy to explain to my people at home why I put on suits and ties every morning and where I spend more than eight hours every day of the year. Sometimes it involves long travels away from home. This visit was a reminder that even as we enjoy the holidays, the wheels of progress continue to turn, powered by the dedication of many unsung heroes. It was the perfect way to blend my love for energy with the joy of the festive season. Wishing everyone a holiday filled with light—both literal and metaphorical! Good evening, Africans and happy festivities.

✨ Reflecting on a Year of Growth and Gratitude ✨ Last week, I celebrated another year of life—and what a remarkable year it has been! From stepping into incredible opportunities to meeting inspiring people, this past year has been a journey of growth, resilience, and purpose. Here are some reflections I’d love to share: 🌍 Professional Growth: Joining KenGen Kenya as a legal intern has been a defining moment in my career. Working in sustainable energy, an area I’m deeply passionate about, has given me a front-row seat to how impactful policy and law can shape a better world. 🌟 Unforgettable Experiences: Facilitating the UN Day youth event remains a highlight. Being part of an intergenerational dialogue on the 'Summit of the Future' reminded me of the power of collaboration and shared purpose. It also reaffirmed my commitment to diplomacy, communications, and building meaningful connections. 🤝 People Who Made It Special:George Drammeh Akelola Judith Mbogo, MPRSK, MMCK, MIR Felicity Otieno Lena Chepkosgei Agnes Teresa Akal, OGW MCIArb Wamwangi Nderitu Nenkishon Ntikalai This year, I’ve been blessed to meet and work with some incredible minds—leaders, mentors, and peers who’ve inspired and challenged me to think bigger and do better. I’m so grateful for every conversation, collaboration, and lesson they’ve shared. 💡 Lessons Learned: Growth often comes from stepping out of your comfort zone. Collaboration is key to creating lasting impact. Gratitude keeps you grounded through it all. As I step into this new year of life, I’m even more excited to see where the journey takes me. Here’s to building on these experiences, fostering connections, and continuing to learn and grow. 💬 To everyone who has been part of my journey this year—thank you for your support, encouragement, and inspiration. Let’s keep making an impact together! #BirthdayReflections #Gratitude #Growth #Sustainability #Diplomacy

“Accompanied by KenGen Chairman of the Board, Hon. Alfred Masadia, the Migori Governor, Dr. Ochillo Ayacko, and officials from the National Lands Commission of Kenya to our Western Region, we have issued forty-five (45) title deeds to our invaluable community members in our Gogo Hydro-Power operations. My heartfelt gratitude to the Gogo community for their support. I trust that mutual engagement and healthy co-existence with communities will sustain the relationship and support our mission in power generation and improvement of livelihoods. The Gogo community has supported our operations for decades, providing land for the Gogo Hydropower Project. The issuance of title deeds ensures long-term land security and fosters sustainable socio-economic growth,” KenGen Kenya MD and CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga. #JenGaKenGen #SustainableKenGen #GreenEnergyKE ^EM
