  • Land tenure insecurity is a problem among older persons in Kenya. They remain at risk of being dispossessed of their lands and being discriminated against due to their advanced age, low socioeconomic status and in most cases, because the #younger family members deliberately decide to turn on them so that they can inherit the land held by the elderly. The world today marks the International Day of Older Persons. This year’s celebration will focus on the theme of "Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide". The goal is to bring together experts to discuss policies, #legislation, and practices that strengthen care and support systems for older persons. We recently visited Mekatilili wa Menza Cultural Resource and Rescue Center in Malindi. Run by Malindi District Association popularly known as MADCA, the center currently hosts several elderly men and women who have been ostracized by their relatives, #evicted, threatened out of their homes, their lands. At Kenya Land Alliance, we believe in safeguarding the rights of older persons, including their rights to proper #shelter, access to safe housing and their right, per Chapter Five of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 to control, manage, and own land anywhere in the country. Older persons have a right to dignified and secure living. #LandRightsNow #DayOfOlderPersons Faith Alubbe

  • On Tuesday, Sauti Ya Wanawake (Pwani) which is a member of Kenya Land Alliance based in Taveta, led the public, several CSOs, local administrators and government officials in a public march to mark the end of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. "Violence against women is one of the most pervasive and disruptive breaches of human rights in the country," said Dorcas Jibran, Chairperson, Sauti ya Wanawake Pwani during the march. She was joined in the march by the KLA CEO Faith Alubbe. The theme for this year’s campaign was “Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls” and it featured, among other things, conversations around the #proliferation and evolution of Technology Facilitated Gender Based Violence (TFGBV). KLA, however, through Sauti Ya Wanawake, has for the past 2 years deployed technology as a mechanism to address land related Gender Based Violence in Taita Taveta county. Our Haki Ardhi App, a women land rights #violations reporting tool, has been instrumental in #reporting, documenting, and accelerating access to justice for women facing land related injustices such as evictions, denial of entry into their property, or disenfranchisement during succession process. #womenlandrights #hakiardhiapp #16DaysOfActivismAgainstGenderBasedViolence Rainforest Foundation UK TMG Think Tank for Sustainability

  • “Taita Taveta county forms one of the 25 counties in Kenya where KLA has for over 20 years tirelessly worked to eradicate all forms of land and natural resources management related Gender Based Violence by advocating for the inclusion of women and girls in land management processes.” This is a statement from the KLA CEO Faith Alubbe yesterday in Voi town today while addressing members of the public during an hours-long procession to mark the end of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Some of the lessons learnt over the years from our work in the county include: 1.     The significance of sustained legal outreaches. 2.     The need for collaborative advocacy between the state and non-state actors. 3.     Embracing of ADR processes at county level. 4.     The place of effective community-led monitoring and evaluation. 5.     And the use of technology such as KLA’s Haki Ardhi App in bridging the access to justice gap. #WomenLandRights #AccessToJustice #16DaysOfActivism2024 Rainforest Foundation UK TMG Think Tank for Sustainability

  • Today, we have held a Town-Hall meeting in Voi, Taita Taveta county. The meeting was attended by Miriam Tilas, the DCC Mwatate, several chiefs, several assistant chiefs, a representative from the Directorate of Lands among other duty bearers and several community members. The convening allowed duty-bearers in Taita Taveta county to hear the viewpoints of communities and other stakeholders regarding various land governance issues. Our CEO Faith Alubbe took the participants through the significance of acquiring the necessary documents to facilitate land transfers during the succession process, issues of forceful evictions, our Haki Ardhi rights reporting tool, AJS as a non-judicial mechanism to addressing land governance concerns and other pressing community challenges. #HAKIArdhi #WomeLandRights TMG Think Tank for Sustainability Rainforest Foundation UK

  • Land in the news: A section of residents from Sosoni village in Jilore Ward, Kilifi County, have threatened legal action against the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) for allegedly failing to settle their wayleave compensation dues. The residents issued a 14-day ultimatum to KETRACO on Friday, demanding the payment of compensation for their land and property along the Kakuyuni-Weru section of the proposed Malindi-Kilifi 82.5 Kilovolt transmission line. • We launched our new Strategic Plan (2024-2028) one week ago. The new SP positions KLA at the center of nationally coordinated policy formulation and advocacy on land justice; exalts the virtues of a stronger network, the benefits of better collaboration in the land sector, highlights the dangers of working in silos and the significance of data and knowledge driven approaches to implementing/facilitating solutions to community challenges. #klabaraza2024 #ThePlan
