Co-working space for Change Makers in Malindi, Kilifi County

About us

Maono was developed as a dynamic space that empowers community based mobilisers and organisers to build networks, to build each other's capacity and to build a movement of the people who truly make a change - the community mobilisers and organisers. It is not quite a hub – at least not the usual kind of innovation hub that Africa is now well known for. It is also not quite the conventional co-working space. The truth is, we don’t know exactly what it is. What we do know is that many community based organisers and mobilisers work in silos in small offices and they struggle with the basic facilities – a stable internet connection, a good place to work, meeting rooms… and because they work in silos, they struggle to build networks and to share lessons they are learning with the world.

Today, in partnership with The Open Institute and Bajeti Hub , we hosted an insightful session on the budget process conducted on our CBO leaders. The session focused on the critical stages of the budget process, with emphasis on where citizens play a key role in shaping decisions. This understanding enables leaders to go back and educate their communities on the importance of public participation and mobilize them to attend key meetings where their voices are needed the most. When communities actively participate in the budget process, they ensure resources are allocated to essential services like education, health, and infrastructure, which directly impact their lives. Public participation is crucial to achieving sustainable development and when citizens are aware of when, how, and where to engage, they are better equipped to speak up, influence decisions, and ensure their needs are met. #BudgetProcess #Maonospace #CivicEngagement

We are happy to have hosted the second edition of the Kilifi Intergenerational Climate Change Dialogue. This local dialogue, organized by our #Changemakers, brought together community members of all walks of life including students, government representatives and climate advocates to discuss pressing climate issues affecting our communities and localise global climate conversations. The main topics of the day were waste management in Kilifi County, climate mobility, and climate governance. These discussions focused on solutions tailored to our unique local needs. We love the idea of localizing global climate concepts because it empowers communities to actively contribute to their solutions. This approach ensures progress that is sustainable and rooted in the realities of those most affected. Local changemakers are at the heart of driving these solutions and they deserve more support to drive sustainable development in their communities.#KICCD02 #MaonoSpace. The Open Institute

We are proud of our #changemakers for paving the way for citizen- driven governance through the Ward Residents’ Forum, a citizen-led platform that bridges the gap between local communities and the government. The WRF empowers residents to directly influence decisions, monitor local projects, and ensure accountability from leaders. They had their first meeting at Ganda Ward, where they met community representatives including village elders, youth, women, and people with disabilities. During this meeting, they discussed about the importance of these forums and how best the community can be involved. We’re inspired by their work to create accountable, people-centered governance in Kilifi! Keep pushing 👏🏾👏🏾 #MaonoSpace #NjooMaono

On October 11, Ganze was filled with joy as over a thousand girls gathered to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child! Thanks to the collaboration of Maono changemakers, @pamojagirls, @angazayoungmoms , and other local CBOs, we came together to uplift and support these young girls with dignity packs, encouraging words, and a whole lot of love. This day is a reminder of the beauty of community and that every girl deserves to feel valued and supported💖. Wonderful things happen when we create community-centered solutions! @okoayouthcbo is leading the way in sustainable change by not only promoting recycling but also supporting the livelihood and safety of waste collectors. Through their commitment to reducing landfill waste, they buy plastics for recycling from collectors, ensuring a positive impact on both the environment and the community. Seeing the risks collectors face while sifting through unsanitary dumpsites, they created Resafi, a tool that connects waste collectors directly with households and small businesses who sort their waste at the source. This makes the process safer, more efficient, and ensures collectors can earn a living with dignity and safety. We couldn’t be prouder of Okoa Youth for this forward-thinking, community-first solution. Keep inspiring positive change! #MaonoChangemakers #OkoaYouth #Wastemanagement #Res

Congratulations to Shella Environmental Youth Group on the launch of Leta Shamba Nyumbani! This inspiring initiative empowers vulnerable women (widows, young mothers, and persons with disabilities) through climate-resilient agriculture, bringing sustainable kitchen gardens to their homes. With support from the The Open Institute, this project aims to uplift 250 women across Malindi Sub-county. We’re excited to see how this will transform lives and strengthen the community’s resilience. Keep up the impactful work! #MaonoChangemakers #Changemakers #ClimateResilience.

Throwing it back to #InternationalDayOfTheGirlChild! Today, we want to shine a light on the amazing work that the Malindi Human Rights Center is doing in our community. They have been leading the way in fighting for girls' rights, making sure every girl is protected, respected, and has a voice. They also work hard to teach our community about girls’ rights and how to navigate the justice system, helping families understand the support available. Thank you, Malindi Human Rights Center, for all you do for our girls and our community! #MaonoSpace #NjooMaonoVictor Kaudo
