  • Today was a big move for lion cub Shujaa! Shujaa’s story began in August 2023, when Lion Landscapes brought her to #MKWC as a blind cub suffering from a severe leg injury. The odds were stacked against her, but her will to survive inspired everyone involved in her care. Thanks to the team of surgeons led by Dr. Benjamin Oundo B.V.M Msc Surgery - North Kenya Veterinary Clinic, and Dr Edel Odhiambo from MKWC, with the support from Dubai's Laser Afarinan ArmananZist Arman(LAZAR), Shuuja underwent a femur repair, eye surgeries, and radiation treatment. These efforts have restored 75% of her vision and given her the ability to walk comfortably. Shujaa’s recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. Today, she embarks on the next chapter of her journey, being translocated to a secure environment. This new home offers her the space and freedom to continue healing and adapting to a life closer to nature. Her neighbour is a mature lioness, so she has the opportunity to socialise and learn from her. As Shujaa strides into her new home, her journey is far from over. Come say hello at the Animal Orphanage and Rescue Centre to follow Shujaa's recovery journey! #Lioness #WildlifeConservation #WildlifeProtection

  • It takes a village to protect and preserve nature's most vulnerable! As human impact on the planet grows, the responsibility to protect and preserve wildlife and ecosystems must become a shared mission. Wildlife is not just part of nature; it belongs to all of us. Today, wildlife populations face significant pressures, from habitat loss to climate change and pollution. But in many ways, these threats also serve as a powerful call to action, reminding us of our collective role in preserving these incredible creatures. At #MKWC, we are proud to collaborate with our valued partners, like Kenya Wildlife Service and IUCN, to provide critical medical care to wildlife in need. KWS plays a vital role in bringing injured or orphaned animals to our animal orphanage for treatment and rehabilitation. Our veterinarians and specialists dedicate their days to monitoring and administering critical care to animals, helping them recover and, in some cases, return to the wild. Advances in veterinary science have been pivotal, enabling more accurate diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Every action we take is driven by our love for what we do, preserving wildlife, and ensuring our Kenyan natural beauty is protected for future generations. Be part of the change; help protect our wildlife! Reach out at info@mountkenyawildlifeconservancy.org to learn how you can get involved. #WildlifeConservation #ProtectOurWildlife #AnimalRehabilitation

  • Have you ever wondered what a day at the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy looks like? Meet James Muraya, one of our dedicated wildlife experts with 35 years of experience at #MKWC. Every morning, his first stop is to check on the animals. You’d be surprised at how they react, some greet him with a gentle nudge, while others follow him around, eager for a little attention. His expertise in animal care plays a crucial role in our conservation efforts, helping to ensure that these incredible creatures are healthy and thriving. The daily tasks James Muraya and his team undertake may seem routine, but they are part of a much larger mission. By protecting endangered species like the mountain bongo, MKWC is working toward preserving Kenya’s biodiversity and fostering a sustainable coexistence between people and wildlife. Every interaction, every piece of habitat restoration, and every moment spent educating visitors is part of a comprehensive approach to conservation. #AnimalCare #WildlifeConservation #ConservationHeroes

  • Classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, leopard populations face threats from habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching. These pressures are driving their populations into decline across much of their global range, raising concerns about their survival. As custodians of our planet, we bear a shared responsibility to address and mitigate these threats.  On 14th September 2019, a leopard was captured limping on a neighbour's CCTV. Aiming to assist it, the resident alerted the #MKWC Animal Orphanage, and we liaised with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to capture it. Sadly, the leopard, who we later named Luna, had lost her front paw, likely due to a poacher's snare. With the expert care of KWS and our team, Luna received treatment and rehabilitation. Though she has fully healed, her injuries prevent her from being released back into the wild. She has, however, adapted to her new life with us at #MKWC, becoming a symbol of survival and a reminder of the critical need to protect our wildlife. Do you want to meet her? Stop by and say hello! #LeopardConservation #WildlifeConservation #Wildlife

I will be speaking at The Dick Vet Wildlife and Zoological Society at The University of Edinburgh in the UK on Monday about my journey in wildlife conservation and about the our great work on the recovery of the critically endangered Mountain Bongo. From reintroducing endangered species like the Mountain Bongo to tackling some of the biggest challenges in conservation, this work is close to my heart. Taking these experiences to the global stage is more than awareness. As the Head of Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, I have led this project working with my team and Kenya Wildlife Service, tackling every challenge that has come our way. Telling the Mountain Bongo story globally is about building the international support needed to preserve Africa’s biodiversity. I look forward to sharing insights, discussing solutions, and hopefully inspiring others to join in protecting our most vulnerable wildlife. 📅 Monday, 11th November 2024 ⏱️ 5:00PM 📍G.01, Easter Bush Campus, University of Edinburgh, UK Join us for an inside look on how we can support a sustainable future for our planet’s most endangered species. #wildlifeconservation #endangeredspecies #mountainbongo #sustainablefuture

  • We have a special new arrival at the Animal Orphanage: a young male giraffe is now in our care. On October 24th, an injured baby giraffe, approximately four days old, was found near Lewa Wilderness Lodge. After narrowly escaping a lion attack, the calf was abandoned by his mother, leaving him vulnerable. Thankfully, the skilled teams from The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Kenya Wildlife Service stepped in to rescue him. He was initially sheltered at Lewa Wilderness Lodge to keep him safe from predators. Since his arrival, our resident veterinarian, Dr Edel Odhiambo, and her team have worked hard to stabilize him, and he is slowly gaining trust and confidence. He’s eating well and receiving treatment for his injuries. He has even been adopted and named Olaf by our General Manager, Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club ! We’re hopeful for his full recovery and excited to support him on his journey back to health. Will you join us in giving Olaf a brighter future? Help us provide the continued care he needs to thrive. (Feel free to reach out via: info@mountkenyawildlifeconservancy.org.) Stay tuned for updates on Olaf’s progress, and thank you for being a part of our mission to protect Kenya’s wildlife. #MKWC #fairmontmountkenya #GiraffeRescue #animalorphanage

  • Meet Esther Wanjiru, one of our most dedicated team members at #MKWC. Esther enjoys planting and nurturing the vegetable garden at the Animal orphanage - the crops grown here are the first line of food supply for the animals. Her passion for wildlife conservation is evident as she shares the stories of our rescued animals with visitors, inspiring them to fall in love with the animals. Needless to say, all the animals love her too because she makes sure they are well-fed and taken care of. Today, we recognize and honour the efforts of Esther and others like her, who work tirelessly to protect and preserve Kenya’s natural heritage for future generations. Happy Mazingira Day!🌱 Humphrey Kariuki #MazingiraDay #SaveTheMountainBongo #WildlifeConservationMeet Esther
