About us
The Western Indian Ocean is being degraded by activities that harm marine life, undermine coastal communities and negatively affect human health. These threats make it more important than ever for governments in the region to work together to strengthen the protection of the ocean. The Nairobi Convention—signed by Comoros, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania, and the Republic of South Africa — provides a platform for governments, civil society, and the private sector to work together for the sustainable management and use of the marine and coastal environment.

The Regional Blue Carbon Workshop in Zanzibar brought together participants to devise strategies for protecting key blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves and seagrasses. These ecosystems not only sequester significant amounts of carbon but also offer pathways to sustainable financing through access to carbon markets, aligning with global environmental objectives. 📰 Read about the workshop in the December Newsbrief: https://lnkd.in/dEujHi84

We are delighted to announce the release of the December 2024 edition of the WIOMSA Newsbrief! 📰 As we wrap up the year, this issue showcases important advancements in marine conservation throughout the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). A key highlight is the election of new country coordinators by WIOMSA members, which enhances the organizational strength of our association. This edition features impactful Seagrass Workshops in Zanzibar, where experts came together to improve seagrass management—crucial for maintaining ecosystem health. We also highlight the inaugural National Marine Biodiversity Symposium in Madagascar, which generated essential discussions on safeguarding marine ecosystems while fostering economic development. Furthermore, we discuss ongoing efforts in Marine Spatial Planning, spearheaded by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management in collaboration with WIOMSA and the Nairobi Convention Secretariat. Be sure to check out insights from the 7th International Marine Conservation Congress and updates from the Hifadhi Blu Inception meeting, along with recent research findings and news from our partners across the WIO and WIOMSA’s affiliate networks.🌍 Access the Newsbrief on: https://lnkd.in/e-zG3KYt /a-new-issue-of-the-wiomsa-newsbrief-has-been-published/

It was an immense pleasure for Collective Leadership Institute gGmbH's Dominic Stucker to contribute to the International Ocean Institute's 2024 Ocean Governance Program! Together with Tim Andrew of the Nairobi Convention Secretariat, Dominic offered an input on "The Regional Ocean Governance Strategy (ROGS) for the Western Indian Ocean (WIO): A Participatory Process for a High Quality and Collectively-Owned Strategy.” During the discussion, engaged participants from countries like Cameroon, Kenya, Liberia, and Togo asked very pertinent questions about how the ROGS Support Team helped countries in collaborating across borders; what stakeholder engagement challenges were faced; how communities, women, and youth were involved; and how the participatory approach might be expanded to other regional seas. Thanks again to organizers Judy Beaumont and Kirshia Govender! We wish all participating young professionals well in their ocean governance careers!
