A State Corporation in Kenya established by the Cancer Prevention and Control Act, No. 15 of 2012 whose mandate is to provide oversight and regulation of cancer prevention and control in the country. The NCI-Kenya’s key functions include policy advisory to the Cabinet Secretary, regulation of cancer care, maintenance of the National Cancer Registry, public education and awareness, research and development on cancer and capacity development for cancer control.

The CEO of the National Cancer Institute of Kenya (NCI-K) attended the National Nuclear Institute (NNI)Project Counterpart meeting at the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NUPEA), alongside representatives from key institutions including KUTRRH, KENRA, KEBS, and major universities. The meeting focused on expanding nuclear energy applications in health, agriculture, and education, with a particular emphasis on enhancing cancer diagnosis and treatment through nuclear medicine. NCI-K highlighted the need for capacity building in nuclear medicine and provided updates on the ongoing construction of specialized nuclear bunkers in Mombasa and Nakuru. The safe and effective use of nuclear technologies was a central discussion point, with a strong commitment to protecting public health. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was recognized for its critical role in setting safety standards, providing technical support, and fostering international collaboration. Moving forward, partners discussed key initiatives such as equitable training, nuclear safety, and the establishment of regional centers for nuclear technology. A significant milestone will be the launch of AFRONEST, a program to strengthen nuclear infrastructure in Africa. Additionally, a Nuclear Conference in August 2025 will showcase advancements and address challenges in nuclear energy and medicine. Strengthening regulatory frameworks and increasing cancer research were also prioritized. By collaborating with the IAEA and international partners, the institutions aim to build a safe, sustainable nuclear ecosystem that drives public health, agriculture, and economic growth in Kenya.
