𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Today, we were honored to host Lena Luig, Head of the International Agricultural Policy Division at Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, for an insightful engagement on agroecology policy and advocacy. PELUM Kenya shared its work on policy advocacy, emphasizing the crucial role of multi-stakeholder collaboration in shaping policies that support sustainable food systems. A key focus of the discussion was the formulation process of the National Agroecology Strategy for Food System Transformation (2024-2033)—a milestone document aimed at steering Kenya towards resilient and sustainable food production. During the session, we reflected on: ✅ The formulation process—bringing together policymakers, farmers, CSOs, and other stakeholders. ✅ Challenges encountered—ensuring inclusivity, addressing policy gaps, and securing political will. ✅ Lessons learned—the importance of participatory approaches and strong advocacy networks. ✅ The way forward—focusing on sub-national level domestication and implementation, ensuring that the strategy translates into tangible actions for communities. We look forward to continued collaboration in advancing agroecology as a key driver for food system transformation in Kenya and beyond. How does climate change impact food, health, and even mental well-being? Today, CIFOR-ICRAF hosted the National Level Stakeholder Engagement & Policy Forum for the #Visibilize4ClimateAction and #PathfinderInitiative projects, bringing together experts to explore the climate-health-food nexus and the policies needed to address these challenges. Climate change is a critical threat to the health of millions in East Africa’s drylands. It affects food security, nutrition, and mental well-being, with extreme heat, droughts, and land degradation worsening undernutrition and health burdens. Despite this, these impacts remain largely undocumented and under-addressed in policy. The Visibilize4ClimateAction Project seeks to make the health impacts of climate change visible through research, policy engagement, and public awareness. The project is analyzing climate, ecological, and nutritional data to quantify climate-related health risks, documenting lived experiences of vulnerable communities, and working with policymakers to integrate climate and health considerations into national policies. "We need policies that work across sectors—climate, food, and health—while supporting adaptation approaches like agroecology and sustainable land management." – Eliane Ubalijoro, CIFOR-ICRAF CEO "Climate change is not just an environmental issue—it’s a food issue, a health issue, and a crisis impacting nutrition and mental well-being. Addressing it requires sustainable land management, stronger policies, and data-driven solutions." – Elizabeth Kimani-Murage, Senior Research Scientist, African Population and Health Research Center. The forum featured presentations on #Visibilize4ClimateAction and #PathfinderInitiative by various speakers. As part of the event, participants toured CIFOR-ICRAF’s facilities, including our soil, seed, and spatial data science labs, where cutting-edge research is driving climate resilience and sustainable land management solutions. This week, PELUM Kenya actively engaged in key discussions on sustainability and policy. We participated in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) analysis stakeholders meeting at ILRI Campus, contributing to climate action strategies. Additionally, we engaged with the Forestry State Department under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to strengthen collaborations on sustainable land use. The Nairobi and Central Zonal office also joined the Nyandarua County Fiscal Budget sensitization in Oljororook Subcounty, where the Director of Agriculture addressed participants alongside the CC Public Works. Article 201 of the Kenya Constitution 2010 envisages transparency, accountability and public participation on matters public finance. Further, section 117 of the Public Finance Management Act 2012 requires that the County Treasury in preparing County Fiscal Strategy Paper takes into consideration views of, among others, the public and interested persons/groups. Most of the County Governments have organized public participation forums to gather views from the public on the Fiscal budgets. Let's all turn up and actively participate. From vibrant vegetable fields to herds of cattle with majestic local breed bulls 🐂, and meeting rooms filled with ideas, the journey was nothing short of motivating. 𝗔 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁? Anders had the unique honor of participating in the celebration of a new well in a Maasai village - a truly memorable experience together with our key partner Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT). ✨ The following week included an enriching exchange with Biovision’s strategic partner Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT) in Nairobi, Kenya, having meaningful discussions on projects and visionary collaboration. Next, during a warm welcome at PELUM Kenya Association, both organisations gained a comprehensive overview of their current projects on agroecology policy processes. Similarly inspiring was the great introduction to the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT’s work in Kenya. Of course, meeting with icipe’s Director General, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝗼𝘂 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝗸𝗼𝘂𝗮𝗻𝗼, his Interim Deputy Director General, Research and Partnerships, Dr. Sunday Ekesi and Grants Manager, 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗵 𝗡𝗷𝘂𝗶𝗵, was an essential part of the visit too. Here’s a glimpse into some of the #moments captured during this trip. These meetings were not only about 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 but also about 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 for sustainable change. With Anders as our new CEO, we are excited to further deepen our partnerships and drive support for agroecology, sustainable food systems, and resilient communities. 🌍 #Agroecology #Partnerships #SustainableDevelopment #FoodSystemsTransformation David Amudavi (BvAT), Janet Maro (SAT), Céline Termote (Bioversity), Rosinah Mbenya (Pelum), Mary Irungu (Pelum)
