Women play a vital role in national economies. Empirical evidence from a study titled Pursuing Women's Economic Empowerment by the International Monetary Fund and another by the UN Women surveying the role of women in development has demonstrated that countries supporting women’s socio-economic development have a competitive edge globally. Yet, gender-based inequalities in the labor market persist. In her latest LinkedIn newsletter edition, PEP's ED Prof. Jane Mariara highlights the key findings from this study on how the state can intervene with targeted schemes to level the playing field for women. This initiative aims to promote sustainable changes through the adoption, funding, and implementation of gender-responsive policies and advocacy for women's economic empowerment in support of the Foundation’s Strategy for Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE), funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
I am pleased to share this newsletter with you. The piece is based on a just concluded project by PEP - Partnership for Economic Policy researchers in Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Tanzania on gender responsive macro-economic policy solutions. The work is supported by William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and together we continue exploring further solutions for the African continent. Welcome and do share your feedback #genderequity #GenderResponsiveEconomics #MacroeconomicPolicy #EconomicEmpowerment

It was indeed a good roundtable discussion with constructive interaction between different stakeholders PEP - Partnership for Economic Policy Center for Global Development Heinrich Bohlmann
Last week Friday, the UP Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, in collaboration with the PEP - Partnership for Economic Policy and the Center for Global Development (CGD), hosted a policy conference and roundtable discussion on "The Role of Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) in Supporting Green Energy Transitions: The Case of South Africa." 📍 The event took place at the Apogee Boutique Hotel and Spa in Waterkloof, Pretoria. The presentations and discussions during the day provided innovative and policy-relevant insights on how MDBs can better support South Africa’s green energy transition, addressing systemic and project-specific challenges while promoting sustainable development. Participants emphasized the importance of inclusive transitions that realign skills with future job needs and carefully considers the sub-regional effects of the energy transition, while addressing the urgent need for scalable concessional financing and targeted technical assistance. The need to lower the risk profile of the South African economy was also highlighted in order to reduce some of the bottlenecks related to the financing of the green transition. We extend our gratitude to all participants, stakeholders, and policymakers who joined the dialogue, contributing their expertise and fostering collaboration. Together, we are shaping a sustainable energy future for South Africa and beyond. 💡 What are your thoughts on the role of MDBs in facilitating just energy transitions? Let’s continue the conversation in the comments below! #GreenEnergyTransition #MDBs #SustainableDevelopment #UniversityOfPretoria #upems #EnergyTransition University of Pretoria

Subsidizing school fees for girls and granting arable land to women farmers in Cameroon can drive structural economic transformation, according to local PEP researchers who evaluated macroeconomic solutions to promote women's economic empowerment These policies address persistent gender inequalities, enabling more women to access education and productive resources. The subsidy increases formal employment for women, particularly in technical and professional sectors, while facilitating land access boosts agricultural production and job creation. 📜 Read the policy brief here: https://lnkd.in/gPsw2ZGu PEP supported this research with funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation as part of the Women's Economic Empowerment in Africa initiative. A team of local PEP researchers hosted a national policy conference to present findings from their innovative research on ICT-enabled climate services to enhance the resilience of smallholder farmers in Benin. The event brought together approximately 25 policymakers and stakeholders to discuss how the introduction of ICT tools can mitigate climate variability, a significant threat to agricultural productivity and smallholder incomes. The research, conducted under PEP’s Fostering Autonomous Local Impact Evaluations for Policymaking (FALIEP) program, was supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The conference attracted representatives from Benin's @Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries (MAEP Benin), the Ministry of Development and Government Action Coordination, academics from Beninese universities, and leaders of farmer organizations and NGOs supporting agricultural resilience. 🗞️ Read the full news story here: https://lnkd.in/gZupgnWA

It was indeed an insightful session. We cannot build resilience in Africa without taking into account the disproportionate impacts of shocks on women in general, marginalized women in particular, and other vulnerable groups. Typical policy responses around controlling inflation, price subsidies and traditional forms of inward foreign direct investment that typically favour male employment, have not been sufficient. This is due in part to the longstanding structural gender inequalities that continue to persist. To improve women’s plight, it is important that the full potential of policies ranging from social protection, financial inclusion, access to credit and board macroeconomic policy are re-considered. Many thanks to African Development Bank Group, UNDP and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa for a great #2024AEC conference. Thanks to the team of researchers from African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), ODI Global and PEP - Partnership for Economic Policy for the excellent work on the impact of the Russia–Ukraine war on Africa. Thanks too to International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada for funding this work. #2024AEC #AfricanEconomicConference #ResilienceBuilding
We had an insightful session at the 2024 African Economic Conference exploring the theme, "Navigating uncertainty: strategies for building resilience in Africa". Thank you to everyone who joined us in Gaborone and online. A recording of the event will be made available on our website soon. A special thanks to our incredible speakers who shared their expertise and perspectives on building a more #ResilientAfrica: ➖ Hon. Dr. Monica Musenero Masanza delivered a powerful keynote address on the transformative potential of innovation, technology and the knowledge economy in building resilience against shocks. She explored how innovation can strengthen critical sectors and foster an environment that truly encourages transformative change. ➖ Colin Bermingham, Senior Economist at European Investment Bank (EIB), presented key findings from EIB's latest "Finance in Africa" report, providing valuable insights into the evolving financial landscape in #Africa. He discussed addressing the financing gap, harnessing fintech and promoting green finance to drive sustainable development and resilience. ➖ Dr. Pagnamam George YEKPA, PhD., Economist at ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) presented key findings from the "West African Development Outlook", focusing on strategies for building resilience to recurring shocks. He emphasised the importance of regional cooperation and the role of development finance institutions in supporting resilience-building initiatives. ➖ Prof. Jane Mariara, Executive Director at PEP - Partnership for Economic Policy, brought crucial attention to the disproportionate impact of global events such as the #RussiaUkraineWar on women and vulnerable populations in Africa. She stressed the need for tailored policy responses and strengthened social safety nets to protect the most vulnerable. ➡️ 📖 The report, "Impact of the Russia–Ukraine war on Africa: policy implications for navigating shocks and building resilience", explores the multifaceted effects of the conflict on African economies and livelihoods featuring eight case studies. It was compiled by researchers from ODI Global, African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), Economic Research Forum and PEP - Partnership for Economic Policy (with support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
