Today, on #WorldAIDSDay, we reflect on the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS and the work that lies ahead. Mother-to-child transmission of HIV is now largely preventable thanks to advancements in #testing and #treatment. Early detection plays a critical role, and it starts with women attending antenatal care (ANC) visits as soon as they know they're pregnant. At White Ribbon Alliance Kenya, we’ve been at the forefront of ensuring that Every Woman ,Every Newborn, Everywhere has access to health information. Our goal is to see, #Kenya achieve the 90% target of women attending ANC visits, which will drastically reduce mother-to-child HIV transmission rates. It is possible to create a future where no newborn is born with HIV. 💪🏾💜 #WorldAIDSDay USAID MOMENTUM USAID World Health Organization United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) AIDS Healthcare Foundation AMPATH Kenya

Last week in Kwale County, we saw firsthand how engaging men in #pregnancy and #childbirth can transform maternal and newborn health outcomes. 💪✨ Kwale is making great strides in maternal and newborn health, and one key factor cited by women is male #involvement. Men are #actively supporting their partners, and it’s showing in the numbers. 📊 This week, we took the conversation to Nairobi County with our #ActionNetwork, focusing on the 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻, 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻, 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 targets. 🌍 Nairobi is on track in #skilled birth attendance 👩⚕️👶, but challenges remain with antenatal care (ANC) visits. Women shared that some hesitate to attend initial ANC appointments due to pressure to bring their partners along, leading to missed opportunities for critical health screenings like HIV/AIDS and Rhesus compatibility. While this involvement is crucial, the men in our training raised an important point: systemic support must follow. 🤔 ✅ Are men getting time off work to accompany their partners to ANC visits? ✅ Are workplaces implementing policies that promote shared responsibility in maternal care? 💼 To hit our targets and reduce maternal and newborn mortality, Nairobi County #ActionNetworks emphasize that ; we must champion male involvement at every level—home 🏠, health facilities 🏥, and workplaces 💻. 🔑 #Skilled assistance during #pregnancy and #childbirth is one of the most effective ways to reduce #maternal and #neonatal deaths. However, many #women and #girls here in Kenya 🌍 — face #disrespectful and #abusive treatment during #labor and #childbirth in healthcare institutions. This creates a major barrier to improving skilled care utilization and achieving better maternal health #outcomes. We recently asked women: “What does respect mean to you when accessing maternal health services during pregnancy, delivery, and after childbirth?” Their responses were powerful yet simple demands: 💙 Being treated in a friendly manner 🤝 Warm and welcoming reception 💫 Kind and compassionate care These demands are not far-fetched; they reflect the lived #realities of many women. Sadly, the prevalence of disrespect and abuse highlights the urgent need for collective action to address these issues in maternal and newborn healthcare. The White Ribbon Alliance Global developed 10 key guidelines that outline the fundamental #rights of women and girls in #accessing reproductive, maternal, and newborn health services. These rights should guide how women are #treated throughout their reproductive healthcare journey. Today, we joined the @Gama Foundation, under the leadership of Hon Gathoni Wamuchomba, for the launch of Kenya’s first-ever call center for #ObstetricViolence (OBV). 💙📞 This platform provides vital, urgent support to those impacted by obstetric violence, helping women seek justice and making maternal healthcare more respectful and safer for all.✊✨ USAID MOMENTUM United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) CREAWKenya AMREF Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society UN Women UNICEF Angela Nguku

White Ribbon Alliance Kenya reposted this

In commemoration of #16DaysofActivism against #GBV, I am glad to be joining the @GammaFoundation, with the leadership of @Hon Gathoni Wamuchomba, for the launch of the first ever toll free call center for #ObstretricViolence (OBV) in Kenya. At White Ribbon Alliance Kenya, we have a strong belief that every #mother and #newborn must have her #voice heard and her #dignity upheld during #pregnancy and #childbirth. #Respectfulmaternitycare (RMC) is a right, not a privilege. OBV, a hidden yet pervasive form of abuse, must be eradicated by all means. It's not just about preventing maternal and newborn deaths; it's about ensuring that every mother and newborn receives the #care that respects her autonomy, dignity, and choices. Nanjala, a mother from a rural village in Vihiga County and now a #RMC champion and advocate knows too well what #disrespectful care means. During her first pregnancy, she faced neglect and disrespect from health workers during childbirth. Her choices were dismissed, and she felt powerless in a moment that she was in dire need and support from those she trusted. Determined not to let others face the same ordeal in Vihiga, Nanjala became an advocate for #RMC in her community. With her courage, she has inspired many women in all their #diversity to stand up for their #rights during pregnancy and childbirth. As a mother, you have the right to #informedconsent, #confidentiality, and #freedom from #discrimination and ill-treatment. Your emotional well-being, choices, and preferences matter. You have the right to a #companion of choice during labor and childbirth and so much more. These rights are not just ideals; they are fundamental human rights that must be respected and upheld. Let's stand together to ensure that every mother knows her rights and entitlements. Let's amplify the voices of women and girls, making sure their #selfarticulated needs and experiences shape the #maternalNewborn health agenda. Together, we can create a world where #RMC is a reality for all. Join us in this movement! Together let us say a big NO to #ObstetricViolence. How do we surpass #globaltargets on reducing #maternal and #neonatal mortalities? Is it even possible? Yes, it is! But only if we shift the #conversations from boardrooms to the #grassroots. With the support of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), we're #localizing the 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻, 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻, 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 (𝗘𝗪𝗘𝗡𝗘) initiative at the county and community levels. This week, our team together with our #ActionNetwork takes the discussion to 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶 counties, focusing on ensuring women: ✅ Attend at least 4 antenatal care visits. ✅ Deliver with the help of a skilled birth attendant. ✅ Receive postnatal care within 2 hours of delivery. A central component of this work is the 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 (𝗥𝗠𝗖) 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿📝, which outlines the fundamental #rights of women during #pregnancy, #childbirth, and #postnatal care. To make this meaningful at the grassroots, we are translating and adapting the #RMC Charter into languages and formats that women can easily understand and relate to 🗣️📖. Through these efforts, we aim to #equip women with the #knowledge and #tools they need to claim their health rights and ensure that no woman or newborn is left behind. 👩🍼🤱 Stay tuned for more insights as we bring the global agenda home🚀💪 UNICEF AlignMNH USAID MOMENTUM World Health Organization MSD Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) FIND

Last week was a remarkable one for our team at White Ribbon Alliance Kenya, as we worked to #localize the 🌍 Every Newborn, Every Woman Everywhere initiative in Kwale County and actively participated in the 🏥 Nairobi Health Conference. A key highlight was the self-care sensitization session in Kitengela, Kajiado County. 💬✨ Here, we connected with adolescent mothers, sparking conversations and sharing tools to help them take charge of their health and advocate for their rights and those of their children. 🤝 Through open and heartfelt discussions, these resilient young women shared their experiences of stigma, rejection, harassment, and financial struggles. 💔💬 Their voices reaffirmed our belief in self-care as a transformative foundation for personal growth and collective action. 🌱🔥 By igniting their inner power and self-awareness, these adolescent mothers are becoming advocates for change—not just for themselves, but for their communities. 💪👩👧✨ SDGs Kenya Forum United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Today, we mark the #InternationalDayfortheEliminationofViolenceAgainstWomen. This day is a call to break the #silence and demand #change. Violence is violence—physical, verbal, or mental—and women are #asking for one fundamental right: #safety, #everywhere, at all #times, in every #situation. When we ask women what they want for their reproductive health rights, their demand was clear: #dignity and #respect. This includes respectful care during childbirth, labor, and every interaction with the healthcare system. Today, we call on everyone—women, allies, and advocates—to unite and speak up against all forms of violence. The time to act is now. In the last two days, White Ribbon Alliance Kenya, with the support of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has been working to #localize the 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧, 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧, 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 in Kwale County. We have trained community action networks, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to share lifesaving frameworks of 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲(EPMM) 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧(ENAP) in simple, relatable language that #resonates with their #communities. These local champions are now igniting change—not only localizing EPMM/ENAP but also spreading awareness about 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞(RMC) Charter, igniting women's power to #know and #demand their rights. Today, we take a big step as our #ActionNetworks move into #communities, taking the #conversation to every woman in Kwale to ensure she is informed and her power to #Act is ignited . This is just the beginning. Starting here, we will expand this #localization across Kenya, turning #global commitments into #local solutions that save lives, #protect and #advance health rights.
