The Open Maternity Day kicked off in Kiandutu Health Centre, Kiambu County this morning. White Ribbon Alliance Kenya in partnership with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) was part of this engaging dialogue with women, adolescent mothers, healthcare workers and Kiambu county government. This year's theme was on the danger signs to watch out for during pregnancy. Dr Angela Wekesa facilitated a Self Care training session, supported by WRA Kenya who offered the mothers educational material on self care before conception, during pregnancy, while preparing for labour and newborns care. The women and adolescent mothers had the opportunity to register for #SHAH on site. They shared their concerns and those of their newborns regarding maternal healthcare. Happy Jamhuri Day 🇰🇪 from us all here at White Ribbon Alliance Kenya. There's a lot to celebrate, but there's much more to concern us. 61 years ago, Kenya’s founding fathers envisioned a country #free from disease and #ignorance. But today, we face a sobering reality: 96 newborns and 17 women die every day from preventable causes (2019 Census). In marginalized communities like Turkana, women and girls still lack access to basic health #information and services. This week, with the support of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), we are in Turkana County ;where maternal and newborn deaths remain unacceptably high. We aim to localize #EveryWomanEveryNewborn and provide #women and #girls with the knowledge of their rights and freedoms while accessing maternal and newborn health (#MNH) services while also integrating self-care practices to enhance health-seeking behaviors. Our believe is; #selfcare is a powerful tool for women to take charge of their #health and #wellbeing. No human is too young to live. Prematurity remains the leading cause of newborn death in Kenya, with a marked increase from 2021 to date. WRA Kenya combined forces with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and in 2024 carried out intensive training and sensitisation workshops for women and adolescent mothers on Self Care practices preconception, during pregnancy, at delivery and post birth. In addition, we've engaged in productive dialogues with select County governments, midwives and healthcare givers, in an effort to amplify the voices of women, girls and newborn demands for dignified health care, with the duty bearers.
