Today, our Managing Director, Dorcas Owinoh, took our Full-Stack Developers through an insightful session on crafting winning resumes. Key Takeaways: 🔹 Simplicity is key – A clean, well-structured CV without colors, columns, or fancy designs ensures readability and ATS compatibility. 🔹 Show impact, not just responsibilities – Instead of listing what you did, highlight measurable achievements. Use numbers to showcase success. 🔹 Tailor your CV to the role – Every job is unique, and so should your CV be. Remove irrelevant experiences and emphasize what aligns with the position. 🔹 Referees? Only when required – Save that space unless a job posting explicitly asks for them. 🔹 Hobbies & interests – Add value or skip them – If they don’t demonstrate relevant skills or strengths, they don’t need to be on your CV. 🔹 Education details matter – Always include your course alongside your institution to provide full clarity. This session was eye-opening, equipping our developers with practical knowledge to craft a winning CV that stands out in today’s job market.

At the Kisumu Gophers Meetup VIII at Zone01 Kisumu, I had the privilege of learning about JSON Web Tokens (JWT or "jot") through an insightful presentation by Hannah juma and Wendy Tabitha. 🔹 What is JWT? JWT is a compact, self-contained token used for authentication and authorization. Since JWTs are stateless, the server does not need to store session data, making authentication scalable and efficient. 🔹 Structure of a JWT: 1️⃣ Header – Contains metadata, such as the algorithm used. 2️⃣ Payload – Stores claims, including user data, permissions, and expiration time. 3️⃣ Signature – Ensures integrity using a secret key or public-private key pair. 🔹 How JWT Works: ✅ User logs in - The client (browser or app) sends login credentials (e.g., email and password) to the server. If valid, the server creates a JWT, embeds user information (e.g., user ID, roles, expiration time), signs it using a secret key, and sends it back to the client. ✅ Client stores the JWT - The client saves the JWT in a secure location (e.g., local storage, session storage, or an HTTP-only cookie). Every time the client makes a request to a protected resource, it includes the JWT in the Authorization header. ✅ Server verifies the JWT -  Upon receiving the request, the server extracts and validates the JWT by checking: - Signature validity (ensuring it hasn’t been altered). - Expiration time (confirming it’s still valid). - User permissions (ensuring the user has the right access). If valid, access is granted; otherwise, the request is denied. 🔹 Why JWT? Since JWT authentication does not rely on server-side session storage, it scales better and remains independent of server state. This makes JWT ideal for distributed systems and microservices, where maintaining a centralized session store would be inefficient. Beyond JWT, we were also inspired by Maurice Nyanja, a seasoned Blockchain Engineer with extensive experience in Golang. He shared his journey and insights, offering valuable lessons that will help shape our growth as software engineers. It was an incredibly enriching session, and I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned in future projects! 🚀 #GoLang #JWT #GofersMeet #WebSecurity #Authentication #Blockchain

  • Today, we joined women across the world celebrating #IWD2025 in imagining a gender equal world. CodeSsipers, a group of ambitious, inspirational, young #womenintech have created a roadmap to #AccelerateAction. This roadmap is based on four topical areas: ✅ “Superwoman” Expectation ✅ Mental Load & Invisible Labor, ✅ Flexible Work & Hybrid Models and ✅ Wellness Beyond Productivity. We are happy to note that this roadmap will not only be used internally at Zone01 Kisumu to increase women participation in our endeavours, we will share it with the global tech community with the hope that more women will be included in the male-dominated tech space. #IWD2025 #WomenLeadership #WorkLifeBalance Stacy Dina Dorcas Owinoh Maxie Daniel

Site Director at Zone01 Kisumu - Recode Africa with African Talent

It has been a real pleasure and an honour to be the Chief Guest during this year's KCA University's Tech Expo. Anchored on the theme of "Next Technology Horizons: Building Skills for Sustainable Development", I gave a Keynote Address on “Unlocking potential for Tech Talent in New Technology Horizons”. My speech emphasized the fact that as of now in 2025, the workforce is evolving rapidly due to advancements in technology. Therefore to that end, possessing a degree or a college diploma is not enough assurance to employers that one can manage the details of a job. Businesses are shifting focus to hiring those with impressive skills and giving a chance to talented individuals who previously might have not landed those roles. I implored the gathering especially the university students to explore and embrace the following if they are to succeed in the emerging workforce: 🖊️ Continuous learning. 🖊️ Soft skills especially effective communication. 🖊️ Value alignment/getting the bigger picture. 🖊️ Awareness of the rise of the everywhere workforce. 🖊️ Mentorship programs. I also dived into the current top tech trends where most of the digital work are. Among others, I gave particular focus to: 🧑💻 Generative Artificial Intelligence 🩺 Genomics 🛜 Edge computing (at the expense of cloud computing) 🖥️ Extended Reality (from Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality to Mixed Reality) 🖱️ Smart/Smarter Devices ➕ Quantum Computing ⛓️ Blockchain Technology 🤖 Robotic Process Automation 🛰️ Space Tourism Alongside our 01 Talent Kenya Agency Business Developer Christopher Arunga, we are grateful to the Vice Chancellor of KCA University Prof. Isaiah Wakindiki for the warm reception and hospitality. Our gratitude also goes to the DVC Research, Innovation and Outreach Prof. Vincent Onywera and by extension the Dean School of Technology Dr. Simon Mwendia and the Dean RIO Dr Lucy Waruguru for the invitation. As Zone01 Kisumu, we believe that our contribution today is well aligned with KCA University's mission to be a creative business and technology University, training employable and market-driven graduates for sustainable economic development. #KCAUniversityTechExpo2025 #NextTechnologyHorizons #TechTalent #UnlockingPotential #BuildingSkillsForSustainableDevelopment
