International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements.  The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. The UK's 2024 International Project Award has been given to the Girls' Education South Sudan (GESS) program for its impact on improving educational access for girls. Girls are 50 percent of total school enrollment in 2022 compared to 45.4 percent in 2020, and the program has seen great successes. GESS has supported over one million girls through cash transfers, enabling them to purchase educational materials and menstrual hygiene supplies. The initiative has helped increase total student enrollment to 2,021,553, with girls accounting for 1,011,607 enrolled students. The program addresses critical barriers to girls' education through community mobilization radio programs focusing on learning techniques, disability inclusion, and menstrual health. It also provides school grants for infrastructure improvements and learning materials. The recognition comes as South Sudan works through immense educational challenges, with more than 70 percent of children not going to school because of war, displacement, and cultural practices.
