I tend to prefer work that I create independently, according to my circumstances. In particular, I think the charm of ‘carving’ cannot be compared to machines. I want to preserve the feeling of handmade work as much as possible, so I make and use tools myself and try to work in my own style. Furniture in the past was made based on physical properties without anyone having to explain it, so the thoughts of the people who made it were put into it little by little. I would be very happy if someone looked at my work and felt or saw something like, ‘You did it with this kind of thinking in mind.’ In that respect, it feels like a medium between the past and the present.
