As negotiations for a global plastics treaty enter their final days, the global spotlight continues to shine on #Busan as the host city of INC-5. But in addition to heated debates on various treaty articles, what other conversations are happening in Busan? In an Op Ed with Busan's Haps Magazine, SFOC's International Communications Lead Kate Kalinova explores the potential significance of the treaty and overall global momentum to shift from linear to #circular economy models on single-use plastic coffee cups in South Korea. The article includes examples from the bubble tea industry in China and a reusable steel cup platform, Vessel Revolution, from the US. You might be wondering what actually happens at COP. It is not only high-level negotiations and panel discussions that take place. Seth Borenstein from The Associated Press invited members from Solutions for Our Climate (기후솔루션) to play Daybreak, a unique board game on climate change. Players represent a country or a region to cooperate on mitigating the global temperature rise by reducing emissions with project cards. Borami Seo and Yi Hyun Kim shared their reactions on the board game that realistically represents the struggles to combating climate change. As INC-5 negotiations advance at a sluggish pace, will country delegates heed the calls to have #Busan be remembered for securing a strong plastics treaty for the #people and #planet? As the host country of INC-5 and a major player in the global #petrochemics industry, #SouthKorea must take the opportunity of INC-5 to develop concrete and practical plans for both reduction of production and carbon emissions. Read more about the recent 11.23 Busan Plastic March and the significance of INC-5 in the new #SFOCInsights blog by Wonsang Kim: https://lnkd.in/gJq5Rvr7 #SolutionsforOurClimate #FossilFuelPhaseOut #GlobalPlasticsTreaty

Did you know that the 3rd largest pension fund in the world, KOREA NATIONAL PENSION SERVICE, still invests USD 18,709M in #coal? Even though they announced a coal-phase out policy in 2021, there has been limited follow up action. During the recent parliamentary audit sessions, youth representative Min Kim from Big Wave, called out NPS for failing its responsibility as a people's pension and urged for greater transparency and action to act on coal phase out. "No More Plastic!" "Less Plastic, More Life!" 📣 Prior to the start of INC-5 in Busan #today, citizens and global civil society groups came together on Saturday for the '11.23 Busan Plastic March', to call for a fair #PlasticsTreaty for the #people and #planet According to the hosts of the march, which was led by the global Break Free From Plastic (BFFP) movement and local Korean allies from the Uproot Plastics Coalition, at least 1,500 joined the march calling attention to the importance of plastic pollution and accountability for those who are leading the negotiations. Participants shared various messages related to plastic pollution - including its impact on human health and greenhouse gas emissions, and called attention to the role of industry and governments in addressing this urgent crisis. As countries come together this week for the 5th and final time to agree on a legally-binding treaty to manage #PlasticPollution - the world is watching. #COP29 highlights - #SouthKorea joins global momentum to curb #methane emissions from organic #waste! On November 19th, 30 countries, collectively responsible for nearly 50% of global methane from organic waste emissions, endorsed the 'COP29 Declaration on Reducing Methane from Organic Waste'. South Korea was listed as the second country on the list, right after Azerbaijan the host country of COP29. This move boosts the likelihood of Korea setting measurable #MethaneReductionTargets for #OrganicWaste in its #NDC. It’s also a golden opportunity to showcase its world-class waste policies and technologies as a global leader. Moving forward, it will be important to see how this move contributes to strengthening South Korea’s 2030 Methane Reduction Roadmap and accelerating meaningful methane reduction efforts across waste, agriculture, and energy sectors. Will countries reach consensus on restricting #oil & #gas finance globally? With OECD negotiations in Paris set to wrap-up today, it remains unclear whether #SouthKorea and #Turkey have shifted their stance to join the majority of countries in aligning on a new agreement to restrict #fossilfuel finance. Between 2018 and 2022, export-credit agencies in OECD - OCDE countries financed an average of $41 billion annually in #oil and #gas projects. The agreement is critical for curbing the harmful impacts of fossil fuels and shifting much-needed financing towards #RenewableEnergy.
