Today, we visited the Sangju Smart Farm Innovation Valley, one of four centers established by South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture and managed by regional provinces and cities. Each center focuses on distinct technologies, allowing Korean companies to test and refine their agritech solutions. The data collected from these smart greenhouses are utilized by the Rural Development Administration to inform policies and initiatives. Every year, 50 young farmers enroll in education programs at the center, gaining access to greenhouse leases to kickstart their agricultural ventures. Local farming communities also benefit from the innovation center by utilizing its advanced facilities. So why were Alessandra and Ji Yeon (Ellen) Lee there? Stay tuned for our upcoming “Soil Stories” this spring, part of the Swissnex for the Planet Campaign! In the framework of her visit to Korea, the President of the Council of States Eva Herzog visited Ewha Womans University, groundbreaking institution founded in 1886 as the first educational institution for women in Korea at a time when education for women was not common or widely accepted in Korean society. Over the years, Ewha has grown significantly, continuing to prioritize female empowerment and education, topics still sadly of actuality in Korea and beyond. The visit continued to the Center for Quantum Nanoscience based in the campus. The President and delegation could learn about the cutting edge research in a presentation and lab tour guided by Prof. Fabio Donati and QNS scientists. In addition, the role of QNS and efforts in creating a cultural and gender diverse research environment have been highlighted by Caroline Hommel in the introduction to the #WomenInScience initiative. At QNS 50% of researchers are international and 57% are women! The President and the delegation enjoyed the vibrant exchanges with enthusiast scientists also over lunch. Thanks to the President and International Team of Ewha Womans University and QNS team for their preparation and welcome.
