We spent a couple of days there this week just as a little getaway. Maybe because it's adjoining. Marwell zoo, but it has the look of a rainforest lodge - the weather was pretty dire, which added to the jungle vibe. Parking was adequate, although I don't know how it would be if they had been busy. All the staff we interacted with we're friendly and helpful. Our room - unusually for us - was on the ground floor and close to reception - which in turn was close to the bar, restaurant and pool. It was a good sized room, with a comfortable double and single bed. All the usual amenities were there, including ironing board, hair dryer, etc. The rooms had a communal veranda which would have had stunning views had the weather been better. Room temperature was tropical, and the only way to regulate it was to keepl the doors and window open. Our bathroom was a bit of a letdown - the fixtures and fittings needed some serious TLC, what with the chipped enamel in the bath and stained tops, etc. We dipped into the pool and sauna - they also host regular swimming lessons for children there, which meant that the modestly sized pool was quite crowded and noisy. The tiled floor is pretty lethal to walk on with wet feet. Changing facilitates are basic and the 2 showers are poolside, with water that reluctantly gets warm eventually and is operated by those push-button controls which need to be pressed every 6 seconds (yes, I timed it.) Like many other hotels, they keep going in the quiet seasons by hosting training conferences - although not excessively so. Indeed, the hotel was very quiet - we were the only diners in the restaurant last night. We had cooked breakfast and an evening meal - the food was as very good indeed, although the choice for dinner wasn't a big choice. Overall, it's a hotel with lots of potential, to the person with the money to spend bringing it up to scratch - not a rebuild - just improve what's already there. They also seem to be missing out on linking it more to the zoo - combined packages, etc.
