ICARDA works in dry areas to promote sustainable agriculture, raise farmer incomes, and strengthen food security.
نبذة عنا
Getting agricultural research innovations into use in the dry areas is critically important, especially since these regions cover 40 per cent of the earth’s surface and are home to 2.5 billion people – a significant percentage of the world’s population. This is the core work of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Area (ICARDA), which works with partners worldwide, developing innovations to improve food security and the livelihoods of the rural poor. ICARDA’s work targets non-tropical dry areas in developing countries, and also produces international public goods with potential for global application. Research covers crops (wheat, barley, faba bean, lentil, chickpea and forage legumes), the management of natural resources (water, land, biodiversity), small ruminant production (sheep and goats), farming systems (intensification, diversification, integration between farming system components), and socio-economics and policy research – on how policies can be more relevant to the situation of low income countries. The estimated benefits of ICARDA’s crop improvement research and production of new varieties over the past 3 decades has been estimated at US$850 million per year. Over 900 improved varieties of wheat, developed from ICARDA material, have been released for cultivation worldwide. The new varieties offer higher yields; better tolerance to drought, heat, cold and salinity; and improved resistance to diseases, weeds and insect pests. Watch our short video - ‘ICARDA - What We Do’

Transforming food systems for a sustainable future Last week from 18-20th February, over 60 experts from six CGIAR centers gathered in Tunisia for the inception workshop of the Sustainable Animal and Aquatic Food (SAAF) science program. These CGIAR centers included International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), WorldFish , Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT , International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and ICARDA . This milestone event brought together brilliant minds to tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time: transforming animal and aquatic food systems to enhance livelihoods and well-being in low- and middle-income countries. What is SAAF? SAAF is one of eight CGIAR Science Programs, designed to create inclusive, low-emission, healthy, and nutrient-dense food supply chains. By focusing on sustainable solutions within animal and aquatic food systems, we’re addressing global challenges head-on—improving lives, protecting the planet, and ensuring food security for generations to come. Key workshop takeaways: ✅ Refined research priorities to align with global challenges and SAAF’s core objectives. ✅ Strengthened cross-program collaboration across CGIAR Science Programs & Accelerators. ✅ Strengthened integration across Areas of Work (AoW), including Productivity+, Climate and Environment, One Health, Market Systems, Policy Solutions and Scaling, Gender, Youth and Social Inclusion, and Digital and Data Solutions. ✅ Leveraged advancements in digital and data science to enhance outcomes and impact. From February 19-20, ICARDA and Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources & Irrigation jointly hosted a consultation workshop to strengthen collaboration and address the pressing challenges of water security in the country. In his opening remarks, Aly Abousabaa, Director General of ICARDA, highlighted that Egypt has optimized its water resources for decades. However, with continued population growth and land expansion, the country’s water resources face increasing pressure. He added, “ICARDA’s integrated solutions in water management, resilient crops, and digital tools can boost efficiency, but removing barriers across Egypt’s agri-food system will be key to ensuring food and water security.” Walid Hakiki, Head of the Planning Sector at MWRI, confirmed that the consultation workshop aims to outline a concrete roadmap based on ICARDA’s context-adapted packages of best management practices and interventions to secure sustainable and resilient water management. Sherif El Mohammadi, President of the National Water Research Center , stressed the vital need for collaboration and partnerships, stating, “Egypt’s water security is national security. Addressing population growth and food security requires not just policies but also research and innovation.” This workshop brought together government representatives, ICARDA national partners, researchers, and ICARDA scientists, by integrating science and policies, we aim to deliver a concrete roadmap for collaboration and sustainable integrated bundled solutions to water management in Egypt.
