  • 🌍 Hon. Pauline Prospere, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology, and Vocational Training of Saint Lucia, addressed delegates at COP29 with an urgent plea for decisive action on climate change. She highlighted the devastating impacts on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and the critical need for global leadership to address this pressing crisis. 📃 " We gather at crucial moment, one that demands urgency and decisive action to secure our humanity and safeguard our future. Leaders from the Caribbean Community make this pilgrimage to COP to advocate for meaningful action to address the climate crisis … Four months ago, Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record ravaged the Eastern Caribbean, leaving behind a trail of destruction to homes, infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, and fisheries." - Hon. Pauline Prospere - #COP29 #OECSClimateAction #Sustainability Government of Saint Lucia

  • 🌎 Hon. Carlos James, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Sustainable Development and Culture in St. Vincent and the Grenadines reminded delegates at COP29 of the devastating impacts of Hurricane Beryl – a Category 4 hurricane – on his country earlier this year, leaving many of the islands in the Grenadines unregonisable and leaving countless of families homeless. The southern Grenadines islands—Canouan, Mayreau, and Union—suffered the most severe damage, with 90–100% of homes affected. 📃 James stated: “Recognising our ecological fragility as a Small Island Developing State, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines cannot afford to be a mere spectator on the issue of climate change. It is against this backdrop that I stand here with the available science and our very own real-life experience of being in the front line of the devastating impact of climate change. For Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, reducing carbon emissions to [remain within] 1.5 degrees Celsius is more than just a target.” #COP29 #OECSClimateResilience #Sustainability Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines

  • 🌏♻️ At an INC-5 Side Event hosted by Common Seas and the Government of Gambia, leaders celebrated and explored strategies to accelerate effective national action in coastal economies, especially in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Discussions focused on how ambitious national action plans can complement the efforts of a bold Global Plastics Treaty to combat plastic pollution. 🌐 💬"Plastic pollution is a transboundary issue which requires regional integration and cooperation – the core mandate of the OECS." Susanna Scott, Officer in Charge of the Sustainable Ocean Management Programme, OECS. Together, we can chart a course toward a cleaner, more sustainable future for our oceans! 🌏♻️ INC-5 is the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. #RecycleOECS #PlasticPollution #Sustainability #GlobalPlasticsTreaty #INC5
