Japan PM vows to lead international AI rules with new framework, Nations should unite to face 'universal opportunities and risks,' Kishida tells OECD https://lnkd.in/gCTGV6FT Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged Thursday to take the lead in formulating global regulations on the appropriate use of generative artificial intelligence technology through a new framework involving like-minded nations. In a speech at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's Ministerial Council Meeting, Kishida expressed his appreciation to other countries for the launch earlier in the day of the Hiroshima AI Process Friends Group. The creation of the Hiroshima AI Process was agreed upon at the Group of Seven summit hosted in May last year by Kishida in the western Japanese city, his home constituency. He attended the OECD's ministerial gathering as Japan serves as its chair in 2024. The Friends group was set up as the world has been seeking ways to harness the benefits of rapidly developing generative AI tools amid fears that the spread of disinformation through misuse of the technology could threaten democracy and political stability. In a bid to grapple with environmental problems, Kishida welcomed the recent establishment of a ministerial dialogue on decarbonization, called the Inclusive Forum on Carbon Mitigation Approaches, which is the OECD's flagship initiative. On the international trade front, Kishida voiced readiness to work in tandem with other countries to maintain and bolster a "rules-based, free and fair economic order, with the World Trade Organization at its core," with China apparently in mind. Economic coercion has been condemned as a tool to attain political objectives, with some democracies said to be adversely affected by the alleged utilization of such tactics by authoritarian nations. Kishida, meanwhile, committed to helping expand the membership of the 38-member OECD so that economies from around the world, including countries in Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe as well as Southeast Asia, can participate in the organization. Kishida visited Paris on the first stop on his six-day overseas trip that is also set to take him to Brazil and Paraguay during Japan's Golden Week holiday period in early May. #Japan #AIRules #OECD #ArtificialIntelligence #ai #machinelearning #technology #datascience #deeplearning #programming #tech #robotics #innovation #bigdata #coding #iot #computerscience #data #dataanalytics #engineering #robot #datascientist #software #automation #analytics #ml #programmer #digitaltransformation #developer #Launch #Investor #funding #startup #Investment #Insight #Technology #Research #TechNews #IndustryNews #MarketResearach #RenubResearch

Australia sets up $650m fund for domestic solar panel manufacturing, Prime minister says Solar Sunshot will boost industry, reduce reliance on China https://lnkd.in/g-BnSymy Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a fund totaling 1 billion Australian dollars ($650 million) for building solar panels domestically, part of the country's efforts to benefit from the global transition to clean energy and reduce its reliance on China. Albanese unveiled the Solar Sunshot program at a news conference at the site of a recently closed coal plant in New South Wales state's Hunter Valley, a heartland of the country's 20th-century fossil-fuel power industry. Australia has the world's highest uptake in solar rooftop panels per capita. As of the end of last year, there were more than 3.69 million photovoltaic installations in Australia, with a combined capacity of over 34.2 gigawatts. But less than 1% are manufactured domestically, with most coming from China -- something Albanese said he wants to change. #Australia #SolarPanel #SolarSunshot #CleanEnergy #SolarRooftop #RenewableEnergy #IEA #CleanerPower #InternationalEnergyAgency #SolarPanels #Batteries #WindTurbines #EVs #ElectricVehicles #EVChargingStations #HydrogenEconomy #FuelCell #FuelCellVehicles #Automakers #HydrogenPoweredCars #FuelCell #Decarbonization #HeavyTrucks #Cargo #ZeroEmission #NextGenerationFuel #RenewableEnergyAgency #Decarbonize #RenewableEnergy #ClimateChange #Renewable #Launch #Investor #funding #startup #Investment #Insight #Technology #Research #TechNews #IndustryNews #MarketResearach #RenubResearch

South Korean startups chase Nvidia with AI chip design push, Entrepreneurs eye global market with help from Samsung and the government https://lnkd.in/g_jjuTXR Startups in South Korea, a country known for its chip manufacturing prowess, are stepping up their efforts in designing artificial intelligence chips to tap the fast-growing global market for AI computing. Some of these "fabless" companies, meaning they don't own production facilities of their own, are getting a helping hand from Samsung Electronics and the government. Rebellions, founded in 2020, is jointly developing a next-generation AI chip with Samsung's foundry, or contract chip manufacturing, division. The chip for enabling generative AI computing will incorporate Samsung's high-end HBM3E memory chip and could make its market debut as soon as the second half of this year. The company said that Samsung's foundry design service team has been involved in developing the AI chip with Rebellions from the early stages. Sapeon, a spinoff from the country's biggest telecom company, SK Telecom, plans to supply its AI chip to customers by June, after launching it last November. The chips are manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. using its 7-nanometer production tech, one of its most advanced processes. The fabless startups' movement comes as global semiconductor companies race to take advantage of the AI boom sparked by OpenAI's ChatGPT service launched in November 2022. Nvidia is leading the market with its graphic processing units for accelerating AI computing. Park co-founded Rebellions after developing equity trading systems for Morgan Stanley in New York and working for SpaceX's Starlink project in California. He earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Rebellions attracted almost 170 billion won ($128 million) in its recent Series B funding round from venture capital firms including Japan's DG Daiwa Ventures. KT, South Korea's No. 2 telecoms company, is a key investor in Rebellions as well. Last month, Sapeon signed an agreement with Docomo Innovations, an affiliate of Japanese telecom giant NTT Docomo, to help the company develop its AI services for industries ranging from the medical sector to insurance. #SouthKorean #Startups #Nvidia #AIChip #Entrepreneurs #GlobalMarket #Samsung #AIComputing #MemoryChip #Sapeon #Semiconductor #semiconductors #electronics #engineering #technology #semiconductorindustry #powerelectronics #computers #engineer #ai #microelectronics #electroniccomponents #Launch #Investor #funding #startup #Investment #Insight #Technology #Research #TechNews #IndustryNews #MarketResearach #RenubResearch

Kubota weighs making own batteries for electric farm equipment, Dedicated plant in Japan considered as manufacturer prepares for rollouts in West https://lnkd.in/gX5a23Af Japanese agricultural equipment builder Kubota is considering making batteries in-house for electric versions of its farm machinery, preparing for rising demand with planned product launches in the U.S. and Europe over the next few years. The manufacturer currently makes diesel engines for its farm equipment in Thailand and Japan, then ships them to other markets such as Europe and the U.S. for final assembly. Similarly, for the electric models, "we want to be able to manufacture [the batteries] in Thailand for Asia, and domestically for Japan, the U.S. and Europe," Kubota President Yuichi Kitao told Nikkei. Kubota began renting out electric tractors in Europe last April. It currently assembles them, with the batteries, in otherwise idle space in existing production facilities. Because the batteries require a particular cooling method unique to Kubota, "we procure the cells from outside, but handle all the design and development in-house," Kitao said. The company will consider building a dedicated battery factory in Japan, depending on demand. Kubota plans to roll out small and midsize electric tractors, mowers and carriers in the U.S. and Europe by 2030. The specific release schedule will be determined based on diesel and emissions regulations in individual countries. #Kubota #Batteries #ElectricFarmEquipment #FarmMachinery #Thailand #Japan #ElectricTractors #BatteryFactory #Japan #ElectricVehicles #EVFacility #Automakers #Decarbonization #ZeroEmission #RenewableEnergyAgency #Decarbonize #RenewableEnergy #ClimateChange #Renewable #Launch #Investor #funding #startup #Investment #Insight #Technology #Research #TechNews #IndustryNews #MarketResearach #RenubResearch

Mitsubishi Corp. to set up car dealer network in India, Japanese trading house to take 30%-plus stake in local company https://lnkd.in/gwVWnP_r Japanese trading house Mitsubishi Corp. will enter the car sales business in India this summer, taking a stake of more than 30% in an Indian company that operates car dealerships in the South Asian nation. India ranks third in the world in new car sales after China and the U.S., but Japanese automakers have a weak presence there with the exception of Suzuki Motor. Mitsubishi aims to sell Japanese cars through the new company in addition to local brands. Under the deal, TVS Mobility, a major car sales company in India, will spin off its car sales business, and Mitsubishi will take an interest of more than 30% in the new company. Mitsubishi's investment, which would take effect after it obtains regulatory approval, is expected to be in the range of 5 billion to 10 billion yen ($33 million to $66 million). After the investment is completed, Mitsubishi will dispatch its employees to the dealer. The new company will develop exclusive stores for each car brand. TVS Mobility currently has about 150 outlets, so the new company will be one of the largest independent car dealerships in India. As the first priority, the new dealership company will expand sales of Honda cars, which are already being handled by TVS. Mitsubishi will take charge of negotiations with Japanese automakers and increase the number of Japanese car brands and models in the lineup. The cars to be sold in the dealership will include electric vehicles. Mitsubishi believes this will lead to more widespread use of EVs in India. Mitsubishi plans to introduce new services such as enabling customers to make maintenance appointments and purchase insurance through a smartphone app, which it hopes will help expand sales as the competition is expected to heat up in India. #Mitsubishi #India #Japanese #MitsubishiCorp #Car #China #US #SuzukiMotor #TVSMobility #cars #car #auto #automotive #AutoSuppliers #Powertrain #JBMAuto #Automotive #Gears #Motors #ElectricVehicles #MitsubishiMaterials #GeneralMotors #carcare #autorepair #motorsport #engine #classiccars #autodetailing #design #drive #vehicle #ElectricVehicles #Carmaker #EVFacility #Automakers #Renewable #Launch #Investor #funding #Startup #Investment #Insight #Technology #Research #TechNews #IndustryNews #MarketResearach #RenubResearch
