Driving Excellence from Ashes in Construction: Embracing Disruptive Innovation On November 7, 2024, the inaugural INSEE Industry Conference took place at the Courtyard by Marriott Colombo, marking a significant milestone for Sri Lanka’s construction sector. With the theme "Driving Excellence through Disruptive Innovation," this event brought together key stakeholders from across the industry to explore how we can transform challenges into opportunities for growth and sustainability. The construction industry in Sri Lanka has faced numerous hurdles in recent years—economic downturns, policy shifts, and global disruptions have all contributed to increased costs and project delays. However, as Nandana Ekenayake of INSEE Cement aptly noted, "these setbacks present a unique opportunity to rethink traditional practices. It’s time to rise from the ashes and embrace innovative approaches that can lead to more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable outcomes." Mr. Christopher Joshua, Executive Vice Chairman of Access Engineering PLC, echoed this sentiment in his session titled “Driving Excellence from Ashes in Construction.” He underscored the importance of discipline, resilience, and innovation for sustainable growth. In times of adversity, these qualities become even more vital as they enable us to adapt and thrive. The conference discussions also highlighted the critical need for sustainable practices within our industry. Prof. Rangika Halwatura from the University of Moratuwa introduced next-level construction practices prioritizing eco-friendly solutions. By integrating sustainability into our projects, we can significantly reduce our environmental impact while simultaneously driving excellence. Architect Nirodha Gunadasa further explored how disruptive design and innovative technology are reshaping our construction landscape. The integration of cutting-edge design not only enhances functionality but also fosters creativity and efficiency. In a thought-provoking session, Mr. Malinda Alahakoon emphasized the necessity of unlearning outdated practices to cultivate an advanced business paradigm. As we strive for excellence, we must remain open to new ideas and methodologies that can propel us forward.
