About us
UNICEF is an inter-governmental agency mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights and to support governments in realising their rights. UNICEF mobilizes political will and material resources to help countries, particularly developing countries, build their capacity to form appropriate policies and deliver services for children and their families. UNICEF works with partners from both the private and public sector in more than 190 countries and territories through country programmes or national committees. We have been working for the children of Sri Lanka since the early 1950s (through our India Office) and since 1973, through our office in Colombo and field offices in Killinochchi and Batticoloa.

UNICEF Sri Lanka reposted this
Children’s rights are human rights. However, in too many places today, children’s rights are under attack. On #HumanRightsDay, repeat after us: #ForEveryChild, every right.

UNICEF in Sri Lanka convened young passionate climate #advocates to discuss meaningful inclusion of the views of #children and young people as Sri Lanka prepares its next climate commitments, known as the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and ensure their prioritization and protection in the mitigation and adaptation measures. #youthforclimate #NDCs UNICEF l UNDP Sri Lanka

Yesterday, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Hannan Sulieman and #SouthAsia Regional Director Sanjay Wijesekera visited Padukka and Avissawella to see how UNICEF’s support is improving healthcare for #children and families in #srilanka. From providing support to: 🟦produce life-saving oxygen in-house at Avissawella Hospital 🟦providing nutrition supplements to address nutrition needs of newborns, new/expectant mothers 🟦empowering community heroes such as mother support group members that work to uplift community health and nutrition, UNICEF's initiatives are creating a healthier future for Sri Lanka’s children. This support should be scaled up to strengthen sustainable healthcare systems, to reach even more children and families across the country. #ForEveryChild
