This high-impact event is designed to address Africa’s unique road safety challenges and is centered around implementing the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. Our mission is clear: to contribute to halving the number of road traffic fatalities and injuries by 2030. The seminar brings together an influential coalition of stakeholders, including: i. National road safety agencies ii. Government ministries iii. Development banks iv. Research institutions v. Civil society organizations vi. Private sector leaders Over the next two days, participants will explore evidence-based interventions that address critical issues such as improving road infrastructure, traffic law enforcement, vehicle safety standards, and public road safety education. At Road Safety Action International, our goal is to engage meaningfully with experts and policymakers, deepening our understanding of regional road safety challenges while contributing tangible, data-driven solutions. Africa faces one of the highest rates of road traffic fatalities globally, and addressing these concerns is key to achieving global road safety targets. We are honored to collaborate with partners such as the @Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), UNECA, GRSP, and the @International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) to ensure safer roads for all. Stay tuned for insights and updates from Nairobi as we work toward making a lasting impact. Together, we can save lives and move closer to Vision Zero—the goal of eliminating all road deaths and serious injuries. #RoadSafety #AfricaRoadSafetySeminar2024 #DecadeOfAction #VisionZero #GlobalRoadSafety #SustainableDevelopment #PartnershipForImpact #RoadInfrastructure #SafeRoads

His participation in this program has been made possible through the EIT Urban Mobility Master School with funding from the European Union as well as ROAD SAFETY ACTION INTERNATIONAL (RSAI) Capacity Development Pathway Funding. This represents a significant milestone for both Benedict and RSAI, as it is part of a broader strategy to build the leadership capacity needed to champion sustainable mobility and road safety initiatives globally. Benedict’s chosen program, which follows a dual university-track, will take him to two renowned academic institutions: the University Polytechnic of Catalonia in Barcelona and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. These universities are at the forefront of research and innovation in sustainable urban mobility, providing Benedict with access to cutting-edge knowledge and practical expertise. The curriculum is designed to explore unconventional urban design solutions such as car-free zones, bike lanes, and pedestrian-friendly thoroughfares—concepts that are being increasingly adopted in cities worldwide as part of a broader movement toward environmentally sustainable transport systems. Benedict’s goal throughout this academic journey is to critically examine how these modern, sustainable urban mobility concepts can be adapted and applied to developing nations where RSAI operates. Many cities in Africa and other parts of the world are grappling with inadequate infrastructure and high levels of traffic fatalities, and RSAI plays a pivotal role in addressing these challenges. Benedict aims to leverage the insights he gains from his studies to develop practical, context-sensitive solutions for improving road safety and mobility Africa, where RSAI is actively engaged. By focusing on the potential for integrating environmentally-friendly urban mobility systems in developing regions, he hopes to contribute to sustainable development goals and enhance road safety. The entire RSAI team is excited about this next phase of Benedict’s professional development. His participation in this Master’s program not only aligns with RSAI’s vision of developing a new generation of leaders but also stands to benefit the broader mission of the organization. RSAI looks forward to the valuable insights and innovations Benedict will bring back, which will undoubtedly play a role in shaping future strategies aimed at promoting safer, more sustainable transportation solutions. Benedict’s dedication and vision continue to inspire, and the RSAI team extends its best wishes for his success in this program.

  • We’re excited to share that our colleague, TIM N. TELYON, a transport engineer and RSAI’s Gambia Expansion Coordinator, is currently representing ROAD SAFETY ACTION INTERNATIONAL (RSAI) at the Africa Transport Forum (ATF) 2024. This year’s forum, hosted by the African Development Bank (AfDB), is themed “Africa on the Move: Accelerating Sustainable Transport and Logistics Connectivity” and serves as a vital platform for shaping the future of Africa’s transport landscape. As discussions at #ATF_2024 focus on sustainable transport, Tim will have the spotlight as he presents one of our sustainable transport case studies: “Navigating Cultural Barriers to Car-Free Urban Planning: A Case Study of Monrovia’s CBD.” This concept envisions a car-free city center, an idea that challenges conventional urban planning across Africa. By exploring how car-free zones could reshape the heart of cities like Monrovia, we hope to ignite thought-provoking conversations around urban livability, economic impact, and the cultural shift away from car dependency. With AfDB’s focus on infrastructure funding and governments keen to modernize urban spaces, this debate is perfectly timed. We’re eager to hear how the transport community, especially AfDB stakeholders, responds to this vision of sustainable, people-centered city design in the continent. #AFT_ideas #Research_#Sustainable #Transport #car_free #RSAI
